New, Separate & Free

The first thing you need to know about the Watch Dogs Legion multiplayer mode is that it is entirely separate from the main game.

The events will all take place after the main storyline, without spoilers, and they have been tailored to online play.

With this in mind, that means you're going to be set up with a brand new DedSec agent for Watch Dogs Legion Online.

You'll still be able to recruit whoever you want to your DedSec cell - this process being streamlined - and the whole "Play As Anyone" mindset Ubisoft have fostered in Watch Dogs Legion's single-player campaign is continuing for this online mode.

" We wanted you and your co-op partners to be able to recruit the same person, so that when you leave the session, you have kind of a memory with each other, that ‘Hey, we recruited the same person together!"

The dedicated online space helps to make the Watch Dogs Legion multiplayer mode a fantastic sandbox that everyone can contribute to, as opposed to being rooted in one player's London.

TO THE SKIES - London is best seen from above, right?

The fact that this is all a free update also helps to reinforce that. The online expansion and its multiplayer gameplay aren't locked behind a paywall.

Co-Op Missions

" Watch Dogs: Legion’s online mode really gets going with co-op missions."

Throughout the Watch Dogs Legion multiplayer experience, DedSec Agents will find a series of co-op missions that they can undertake in groups of 2-4 players.

These will feature a varied objective set and encourage co-operative play with complementing skills and Operator choices.

TOGETHER - DedSec cells work at their best when there's co-operation, right?

You and your crew will need to get used to "destroying vehicles, neutralizing targets without being detected, and coordinating hacks" in order to build up your DedSec cells in preparation for the greater challenges to come.

There are solo activities too though, so if you're waiting for your friends you don't have to stand around not doing anything!

Tactical Ops

These are the ultimate co-op challenges Watch Dogs Legion's multiplayer experience has in store for players.

Tactical Ops are co-op experiences spread over five stages of gameplay that require "intensive communication, coordination, and teamwork". Basically, they're the best part about the new Watch Dogs Legion multiplayer mode.

" ... a team of four is highly recommended. In these endgame-level missions, if a single member of the team is eliminated, the entire crew will have to start the stage over from the beginning..."

Each Tactical Ops mission has checkpoints, too. So, if you don't have a lot of time you don't actually need to complete every phase in one session.

However, you're going to want to be ready for the boss encounter at the end of each Tactical Ops mission. This Watch Dogs Legion multiplayer mode will give you your toughest challenge yet.

These are designed to offer a "stiff challenge" for co-ordinated teams and are designed for players with a wide array of skills.

Spiderbot Arena

On top of all this, if you don't really fancy the co-operative aspect of the Watch Dogs Legion multiplayer experience...

Spiderbot Arena is here to pit you against one another in a "free-for-all arena deathmatch" with a twist.

" Matches are fast-paced and frantic, as you scurry and double-jump your way to randomized mystery boxes that contain powerful weapons like shotguns, lasers, tracking missiles, and more.

SPIDERBOT - Are you any good with these little things? You might need to be!
Take out enough opponents in a row and you’ll be rewarded with a killstreak bonus that could reveal enemy locations, supercharge your weapons, or give you a shield."

It basically sounds like a pretty standard deathmatch mode that should offer something a bit different to the rest of Watch Dogs Legion's online components.

Multiplayer Release Date

Watch Dogs Legion Multiplayer is coming March 9th, 2021, on consoles and has been delayed indefinitely on PC.

It is also worth noting that the Tactical Ops mode isn't going to be available on consoles until March 23rd, 2021. However, this should give you enough time to gear up for the challenge!
