GenDesign, the team behind The Last Guardian and Shadow of the Colossus has revealed some new artwork from its next project, which will be published by Epic Games the developers of Fortnite.
The Last Guardian Developer's Next Game
The new artwork from the game can be found when visiting GenDesign's official website and features a celebration of the new year, showcasing their three past titles: the aforementioned The Last Guardian and Shadow of the Colossus, as well as Ico.
The actual art for the new game is pretty small but shows a young man in a red cape, navigating a swampy land and standing next to a giant creature, which was previously teased by the developer back in 2018.
The full image serves as a nice celebration of the studio's history and how they went from being an internal part of Sony Japan to breaking out on their own.
This title will be one of the first released under Epic Games' new publishing label, which it announced last year. GenDesign have full creative control over this property and own the IP it is creating here.
Epic has also covered 100% of the development costs of the project and offered support for localisation, marketing, and help to publish the game.
The studio has a history of creating products focused on a young hero trying to save a princess or woman from danger. That hero then interacts with large creatures, be it or a friendly or not, as he traverses a large open landscape, filled with mystery.
We can expect this title to be similar and the art we have seen so far certainly seems to suggest that.
Fumito Ueda, the Creative Director on GenDesign's projects discussed some early details with Famitsu in 2018 stating
"What we’re making now doesn’t feel like an indie game. We’re ultimately aiming for something on the scale of Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, and The Last Guardian."
"This will be a completely new title, not a sequel."
GenDesign have done a great job at developing new worlds for players to explore and encounter and whatever this project is will likely be as thrilling and entertaining as what has come before it.
The game looks to have come quite a way since 2018, so we may get a better look at it soon in a reveal trailer.
