The reason to use pings over anything else is down to their clarity and speed of them. It's a lot quicker to ping the map than it is to type something out in the chat, making for a more fluid gameplay experience.

It's even beneficial for League of Legends teams in a voice chat, providing a quick visual representation for any discussion to assist your teammates in understanding what you're saying quicker.

Most pings can be bound to a hotkey in settings, which is a great tool if you need to use them mid-fight. Others though can be found by opening the ping scroll wheel, which can be found by holding down the button you use for an alert ping.

Types of Pings

A "Basic" ping in League of Legends, which can be placed by pressing G or Ctrl and then left click, allows players to mark locations to move to, enemies to target, or the health of structures across the map.

A "Caution" ping allows players to warn their team, retreat from enemies or structures and warn teammates about the health of allied structures.

Other important pings include 'on my way' and vision pings, which can be bound to a key in settings, or found via the scroll wheel.
