The beta for League of Legends in 2009 featured only 17 champions. Since then, the game has expanded massively with a bunch of new champs.
With numbers now hitting 160+, Riot Games have worked hard to bring new content and champions to the Summoner's Rift. However, as players have to pay for these champions, buying all of them runs a big bill.
This is why Riot decided to make it possible for summoners to test and play some champions who they don't already own for free. This weekly free champion rotation changes every Tuesday so all champions get their time in the sun.

Free Champion Rotation Schedule
Riot Points or blue essence won't need to be spent to play these free champions. Riot updates these every Tuesday so that players get a chance to try every one.
Players only need to be level 11 to access the free League of Legends champion pool each week, and new champions are added to the pool usually three weeks after their initial release so that they are balanced. That means this week, we'll see Nilah, the Joy Unbound!
