Subscription Fatigue is something that affects millions of people and many different industries, such as streaming, music, video games, and of course, sports. With football being the biggest sport in the globe its fans are also the most affected, with people dealing with this problem daily.
There are a plethora of football competitions, and their streaming rights are owned by multiple entities, meaning fans have to sign up for different subscription services just to be able to watch their favorite team play.
With fans being signed to so many different subscription services it can become hard to know which ones to use, what games or sports they should watch, and to keep track of all the content the different subscription services offer.
So let’s take a deep dive and understand how subscription fatigue is affecting sports fans.
Why Sports Fans are Suffering from Subscription Fatigue
As mentioned above, subscription fatigue is something that affects the majority of sports fans and has many negative effects. Let’s take sports fans from the United Kingdom as an example.
The Premier League is arguably the best football league in the world, and to watch it United Kingdom sports fans need to be subscribed to Sky Sports. However, if those fans also want to watch La Liga they will need to subscribe to either ITVX, Premier Sports, Amazon Prime Video, or LaLiga TV. When it comes to Seria A, TNT Sports, and Onefootball, are the only subscription services that broadcast the league.
So to watch the top three leagues in European football, United Kingdom football fans need to be subscribed to at least three unique subscription services. When we add other competitions such as the Portuguese league, which is only available on TrillerTV+, or Ligue 1, that fans can only watch on LFP Media, the number gets bigger.
If we also take into account other sports, such as basketball, cricket, tennis, darts, and boxing, among many others, the subscription tally is astronomical. One or two subscription services can already prove hard to manage, but managing six or seven can be a true nightmare for sports fans.
Having so many subscription services can cause fans plenty of different problems. Fans will wonder which one to use if a match is being broadcast by two of them. If there are matches that take place at the same time fans will have to pick and choose which one to watch. With so many subscription services fans can also struggle to find where the match or tournament they want to watch is being broadcasted.
Another big problem fans usually face when having too many subscription services is not knowing what to watch. Sometimes having too many options can make things harder than when there is only one.
Having a lot of subscription services will also cause a dent in sports fans' wallets, leaving them constantly wondering if certain subscription services are necessary. This is not great for fans' mental health, which instead of enjoying watching a sports match will be thinking about the five other subscription services they are paying for and not using at that moment, and if that is a good or bad financial decision.
All of this is what leaves sports fans with subscription fatigue. There are simply too many subscription services needed to watch sports, which makes it too expensive and hard to manage for fans, as well as impossible for fans to have time to use all of the subscription services they pay for.
Unfortunately, this is a problem that affects many other industries, and it doesn't seem it will get better soon. So subscription fatigue is something sports fans need to be careful about, as it’s very real, and has serious consequences.
