Hitman 3 VR: Devs Discuss The Struggles Of Developing The Game For Virtual Reality

Hitman 3 is finally being released later this year, bringing us the conclusion of the World of Assassination Trilogy, which began with 2016's Hitman reboot.

One notable feature that Hitman 3 has is VR mode, for the first time ever players will be able to see the world through Agent 47s eyes.

How VR Came To Be

In an interview with our partner, Gfinity, Forest Swartout Large, the Executive Producer and Game Director Mattias Engström gave us an insight at what to expect from the VR mode and the struggles they faced while making the game work in first person.

The way that it came about was a passion from two of our game designers
It's a completely crazy proposition. It's insane. We had to touch every shader, every interaction, every feature, every visual and auditory moment. I mean, it's just like every single area of the game we had to revisit, touch or redo at times, and then re-test,”

Virtual Reality is still very much a niche part of video gaming, but hopefully it reaches a more mainstream audience as tech advances and becomes cheaper and more accessible.

Hitman 3 will be one of the few AAA games to see VR added, with only a handful such as Skyrim and Resident Evil 7 also supporting virtual reality.

Going From Third Person To First

The Hitman series has always been in 3D, with the player spending hours staring at the back of Agent 47s head.

But now we get to actually be inside his head and looking through his eyes.

Engström notes about how they altered the game to make it work in first person,

All of the puzzles have been done in third-person, but now you're in first-person, so striking a balance between fast and smooth gameplay and immersion, that's been a challenge and hard to nail. But I think we landed in a spot where I'm having such a wonderful time playing in VR, it's pretty damn cool.

VR mode will be available on PC and PlayStation, with both the PS4 and PS5 capable of using the PSVR headset.

Will We See A Fortnite X Hitman Crossover?

Fortnite Chapter 2 Season 5 has been all about "Hunters" crossing over into the Fortnite universe.

So far the season has seen Kratos from God of War, Master Chief from Halo, Daryl and Michonne from The Walking Dead, and soon Predator will be joining the game.

There are also rumours that Terminator and Tomb Raider's Lara Croft could be added to the game too.

Of course, Gfinity had to ask the question everyone wants to know, is Agent 47 coming to Fortnite?

Hard no”

Well, that's that one answered then.
