Live events are a huge part of gaming in 2021. Not only do they extend the life of a game, but they're a great way of selling the potential of a game to new players.
Epic Games have been the masters of this for years, blowing people away with world ending live events and Travis Scott concerts in Fortnite.
Each one more exciting than even new seasons, they showed off the possibility of modern multiplayer gaming.
Live Events in 2021
Now, live events are expending into more and more games, to great effect.
Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War was revealed via an in-game Warzone event, the Sims 4 has in-game concerts starting at the beginning of July, and thousands have gathered in The Tower in Destiny 2 to check out huge spectacles.
They're becoming more and more common-place, especially as more and more games take on the multiplayer or live service approach.
The most popular ever Fortnite live event garnered 15 million viewers and even managed to crash Twitch, where it was being shared by those millions.
With that kind of potential success, it should come as no surprise that more and more developers are embracing them.
Reveals in GTA Online
The recent leaks/rumours, therefore, which suggest that GTA 6 could be revealed via in-game events in GTA Online, make a lot of sense.
Since GTA 6 hasn't been officially confirmed yet, let alone how Rockstar are going to reveal it, all of these rumours need to be taken with more than a pinch of salt.
That kind of thing happening would only be a continuation of a trend, though. While both GTA 6 and Rockstar are big enough beasts to announce things however they like, it would be smart to embrace something that's clearly proving to be successful for even the biggest titles.
How Live Events Could Work in GTA 6
How potential live events work in GTA 6 somewhat depends on the role GTA Online will play in GTA 6.
Will it remain a separate experience or will it be fully integrated to make GTA 6 an always online game?
To make them as affective as Fortnite's, they'd need to be in whatever form GTA Online takes, as they wouldn't quite work alone in single-player.
They would also have to be more on the Sims 4 concert side of things than the giant Travis Scott looming over the map end of the scale. After all, even if it's on the exaggerated side of reality, Rockstar's series has been based on reality to some degree.
Imagine hundreds of players gathering for concerts on the beaches of Los Santos, or wherever GTA 6 is set, or all heading to the downtown area for a massive party.
The series has always been a playground, that's what has made it so popular, and GTA 6 will be massive, with an endless amount of things to do.
Taking advantage of those possibilities in the form of live events, while showing what is possible in the game, would only make whatever form GTA Online takes more popular than it already is.
Hopefully it's something we see come to fruition, as Rockstar would be silly to not at least give them a go.
