Diablo 4 news is coming thick and fast this week as expected. Following comments during the Activision earnings call which stated that both Diablo 4 and Overwatch 4 were doing better than expected in development.
We now indicate that Diablo 4 is entering console testing or potentially even a limited public alpha. Here's what we know so far.
Diablo 4 Alpha uploaded to PlayStation store
Thanks to @PlayStationSize on Twitter, we have the first details on the Diablo 4 alpha file, which has been codenamed, Oberon.
The file size is quite large compared to many other alphas that get uploaded to console stores. It could be that the file isn't quite optimised for consoles just yet but it's exciting nonetheless to see it uploaded.
Why is it called Oberon?
Oberon is a character from Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream and is King of the Faries in Medieval and Renaissance mythology.
Oberon is derived from the name Alberich, the dwarf king in German mythology. Could this alpha code name be hinting at a new class being added to the game? We already have the Barbarian, Druid, Sorceress and Rogue.
A dwarven class, perhaps as a Bezerker, would be a great addition to the lineup.
Diablo 4 Release Date
The official release date for Diablo 4 is still unconfirmed but as mentioned, development is going well and it could be set for a 2022 release date.
We do have confirmation on one Diablo title releasing in 2022 though as Diablo Immortals is set for the first half of the year. Diablo Immortals was of course the mobile title that was announced at BlizzCon in 2018 when fans were instead expecting an announcement for Diablo 4.
Despite a rocky start, the alpha testing phase for Immortals has been promising and it's no become an intriguing experience that Diablo fans are looking forward to.
