The THQ Nordic Showcase has revealed that the iconic horror franchise Alone in the Dark is returning! In what is a reboot of the franchise, it will look to ignore some of the more recent releases that underperformed and instead look towards the original game from 1992 for inspiration.
While there was only a small glimpse of the game in the trailer, we were lucky enough to sit in on a preview with the developers at Pieces Interactive who are behind the reboot. We'll take you through everything we saw and know so far about the Alone in the Dark reboot!
Alone in the Dark Release Date
We'll get the obvious out of the way first. No release date was given and Alone in the Dark is aiming for a 2023 release.
No assurances were given and with the way the gaming landscape has been over the last 18-24 months, delays are always possible.
Platforms
Alone in the Dark will be released on PC, PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X/S. Initial looks at the game show it to be one of very high fidelity so it makes sense that Pieces Interactive wouldn't want to limit themselves with porting to last-gen consoles.
Setting
The game will take place in Derceto Manor from the original game. It was, however, explicitly stated that we'll be visiting other areas, likely ones that are supernatural in nature.
Primarily, the game is set within New Orleans and this comes across very well in early screenshots from the areas that have been shown outside of the mansion.
Gameplay
We were fortunate enough to get a glimpse of some gameplay during this preview. It's going to take the Resident Evil 2 remake approach to style with a close 3rd person camera and horror/action seemingly being the overall aesthetic.
Story
The story was kept under wraps, mostly. We did learn that there will be two playable characters; Edward Carnby & Emily Hartwood.
Emily's uncle has gone missing under strange circumstances and enlists the help of detective Edward to investigate. There are certainly Lovecraftian vibes from the trailer and gameplay we've seen which is very exciting!
