There is a special breed of gamer out there that loves the shock, thrill and scares that come with horror games. If you're one of them, here are some of the best horror games on the Xbox Series X.
It doesn't matter whether you're looking for a psychological thriller or jumpscare minefield, we've got something for every type of horror fan. Let's take a look at the games!
7. Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes
We're starting with the Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes and, to be honest, it could have been any of the DPA games on this list. Man of Medan and Little Hope are both probably more hardcore horror experiences but both rely a little too much on traditional horror tropes.
With House of Ashes, it feels much more unique in its narrative and character development. The great thing about the DPA games is that they can be played via couch co-op as you and your friends and family decide what decisions to make and watch the consequences play out in real-time.
6. State of Decay 2: Juggernaut Edition
Somewhat less traditional than most of the other games on this list, State of Decay 2 is more of an action-first title but still provides a fantastic horror atmosphere and plenty of scary moments. It's a much-improved game since launch and the full Juggernaut Edition is available via Xbox Game Pass.
To get the most out of the game you may need to up the difficulty to ensure you're not overrun with supplies and the enemies are just as brutal as they would be when the real apocalypse comes about.
5. Maid of Sker
Maid of Sker is a game that will test your patience as it's certainly not the most mechanically sound game on this list. The upside, however, is that it has a fantastic story based on Welsh folklore that has been wonderfully put together by developer Wales Interactive.
Visually, the game also excels, but it's the gameplay and mechanics that could do with a little more polish. If you're a fan of the classic Resident Evil or Silent Hill games, they are the clear inspirations for this title. It's also fascinating to look at the real-life story that inspired the game!
4. The Medium
Originally an Xbox Series X exclusive, The Medium impressed at launch with its visual design choices and overall psychological horror storytelling. You'll take on the role of Marianne, a medium who helps restless souls seek peace. A recurring dream sees her seek advice from her recently deceased foster father and thus her journey begins.
While the gameplay is once again a backseat companion to the story here, it's not so severe as in many other titles and the gameplay mechanics are still very solid and enjoyable. The story is easy to follow and full of twists that culminate in a fantastic ending.
3. Little Nightmares 2
The original Little Nightmares came as a pleasant surprise to many who decided to give it a chance and it managed to perform well enough to justify this sequel. There are clear nods to the previous game although you will be taking control of a new character called Mono.
The weird and wonderful visuals are back and they're disgustingly beautiful. If you're looking for a game that manages to pull off gross, cute and dystopia all at the same time, Little Nightmares 2 is for you.
2. Resident Evil: Village
Easily the highest-profile game on this list, 2021 Game of the Year nominee Resident Evil: Village continues the franchises strong return to form with another game-changing entry in the series. While RE7 may have been the scarier of the two recent games, Village is a much more rounded experience offering depth to every aspect of the game from mechanics to the story and world it's set in.
It's not the longest game in this list but is very well-paced and comes with a factor of replayability as well as post-credits content to explore if you wish.
1. Simulacra
It's no surprise that I'm putting SImularca on top of both the best PS5 and Xbox Series X horror games lists. This experience is one that should be played by any horror fan as it will truly test your mettle.
It's every type of horror rolled up into one FMV experience that takes place entirely within a mobile phone. I can't say too much more for fear of spoilers but just know if you're looking for a scare on the Xbox Series X, Simulacra is the way to go.
