Hideo Kojima spent almost 30 years working for Konami before his departure in 2015.
During that time he became the brainchild of IPs such as Metal Gear and Zone of Enders.
After leaving Konami he set up Kojima Productions and released Death Stranding in 2018.
Microsoft To Acquire Kojima Productions?
When Kojima Productions was first started, they partnered with Sony to release Death Stranding as a PlayStation 4 exclusive.
The game has since gone on to be ported to PC.
According to rumours, the studio may be set to be acquired by Microsoft, who are currently expanding their Xbox Games Studio portfolio.
Earlier this year they acquired ZeniMax, the parent company of Bethesda.
Because of the acquisition they now own franchises such as DOOM, Wolfenstein, The Elder Scrolls, and Fallout.
Recently a rumour began that Microsoft were looking to acquire a prominent Japanese studio in order to help make the Xbox appeal to the Japanese market.
Japan is a market they have always struggled to crack due to the success of Sony and Nintendo.
A image was posted on Twitter by RedX53 which shows an image of an unknown Spanish magazine, which reveals the rumour that Microsoft are set to acquire the studio.
The text is in Spanish, but a user has translated it and, if true, reveals some interesting information.
What Does It Say?
With rumours they always need to be taken with a grain of salt.
Until confirmed it is purely speculation, but this is what a user translated it to say.
Note, Google Translator often makes sentences sound weird, but the context is still there.
"The following study (studio) to be purchased by Microsoft is confirmed - it will be...Kojima Productions."
"Following Microsoft's purchase of Bethesda, the Redmond folks continue their tireless search for new companies to incorporate into the Xbox Studios family. And be careful, nice guys, because the next studio to join Phil Spencer's team will not be related to Sega, as was rumored at first, the chosen one will be neither more nor less than Kojima Productions, the company directed by Hideo Kojima himself. Former gardener and head of the Metal Gear saga. How does your body fit? At the moment, this historic agreement has not transpired to the vast majority of media."
"But our inside information points to it going official during The Games Awards 2020 gala, which will be broadcast on December 10 via streaming. This is how his regular presenter, Geoff Keighley, has let us glimpse, in confidence of course, who has also hinted that the announcement will be accompanied by the first trailer of the new studio project which, presumably, will come out in the second half of 2022 and, for the first time in its history, exclusively on Xbox consoles. Oh mother... the one who's going to mess up!"
Do We Think The Rumour Is True?
Honestly, probably not, plenty of things don't add up, but its an exciting thought.
It seems strange that the news is reported in a Spanish magazine, but no other major publication or website has reported on the news.
Signs do point to Microsoft wanting to acquire a Japanese studio, but the likelihood of it being Kojima Productions is pretty slim.
Kojima has had a long standing relationship with Sony and it seems unlikely he would end that.
Hideo has always appeared to be more about the art than the money, so loyalty to the company who has allowed him so much freedom seems very plausible.
If it happens, great, but don't expect the announcement on December 10.
But, what we do know is, Kojima will be appearing in Cyberpunk 2077.
Kojima In Cyberpunk 2077
Earlier this year CD Projekt Red created a mock-up of what, the Metal Gear Solid creator, Hideo Kojima would look like in Cyberpunk 2077.
Well, it turns out it may not have just been a mock-up, because he has been found in game.
Reddit user, AxePirate, uploaded a video which shows Kojima in-game, sitting on a couch talking to a couple of women.
This confirms that Kojima is indeed making a cameo in the game.
