NFL Week 5: Green Bay Packers vs Dallas Cowboys preview and prediction

One of the best matchups in Week 5, includes a rematch of the NFC divisional round between the Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys in AT&T stadium

In Week 4, Green Bay and QB Aaron Rodgers dismantled the Chicago Bears on Thursday night. Rodgers threw for four TDs as they cruised to a 35-14 victory. This victory came at a price though, as some key players suffered injuries. They will look to get their 3rd win in a row as they travel to Dallas this Sunday.

Dallas suffered a tough loss on Sunday, as they failed to pull on out at home against the LA Rams. The Cowboys jumped out to a 17-6 lead in the 2nd quarter, but could not stop RB Todd Gurley and the Rams offense for the rest of the game. The Cowboys offense only put up six points in the 2nd half, as this anemic performance ended up costing them the game. The slate does not get any easier as they host the Green Bay Packers Sunday.

How awesome was this matchup in the playoffs last year? Green Bay’s thrilling 34-31 victory was one of the games of the year, and was not short of any entertainment. In that game, Green Bay QB Aaron Rodgers threw for 355 yards and two TDs, and had one of the throws of the year that set up K Mason Crosby with the game winning FG. The Cowboys also exhibited some offense, specifically when they charged back into the game from down 28-3. QB Dak Prescott threw for three TDs, while RB Ezekiel Elliott carried the ball for 125 yards on the ground. If this season’s matchup is anything like the last one, you should grab your popcorn and enjoy it.

Time of possession

With both defenses dealing with key injuries and giving up over 20 points per game, look for the offenses to try and control the time of possession. The best way to hide a below average defense is to keep them on sideline. The team who wins this battle, could be in the driver’s seat to win the game. Dallas ranks 23rd in average time of possession, where Green Bay ranks 7th. I would fully expect Dallas to try and keep Aaron Rodgers and that Packers offense off the field for as long as possible, so it will be important for them to jump out to an early lead.

Dez Bryant

This could be a bounce back week for Dallas WR Dez Bryant. Over the first four weeks, he has struggled to establish an effective connection with QB Dak Prescott, as Dez has been targeted 40 times but only has 16 receptions. It’s clear that Dallas wants to get Dez involved and back to his All-Pro form, but things just haven’t quite clicked. However, I would look for Dez to have a big week this week. In the playoff matchup last year, he accounted for nine catches 132 yards and two TDs, seemingly having his way against the thin Packers secondary. Green Bay remains weak at CB, so expect Dak to find his star WR, as they get back on track this week.

Green Bay’s S’s vs. Dallas TE Jason Witten

Dallas TE Jason Witten might have slowed down some with age, but his production value still remains very serviceable. Witten is 2nd on the team in receiving yards with 168 and tied for the lead in TD receptions with two. There is a high likelihood that this game will be high scoring, so Witten will likely be an important part of the offensive game plan as Daks security blanket. The Packers have done a good job against TEs through the first four weeks, holding opposing teams TEs to 12 catches, 106 yards and no TDs.

Fantasy Football Tip- Green Bay QB Aaron Rodgers

If you have QB Aaron Rodgers on your fantasy team or can roster him in any DFS format, do it! He is the best option this week at the position, and with their injuries at RB, expect him to put on an aerial show Sunday. He torched Dallas the last time these two met for 355 yards and two TDs, and I would at least expect the same type of numbers this week. Dallas has struggled to be consistent in the secondary this season, and hasn’t faced an opponent like Aaron Rodgers yet. Rodgers has thrown for eight TDs and one INT against Dallas in six regular season games, and in perfect conditions on a fast track, look for Rodgers to put up gaudy numbers in this one.

Betting Tip- Green Bay (+2.5)

Again, this is another game that I expect to be close. Green Bay’s injury issues are a bit concerning and they have to go on the road to Dallas, where the Cowboys have been good since QB Dak Prescott took over. However, Green Bay still has Aaron Rodgers and that will be enough to keep them close in this matchup. I like Green Bay getting 2.5 here.

Prediction: Dallas Cowboys 32-31 Green Bay Packers

Flip a coin on this one. I expect the scoreboard to be lit up in this showdown, as both teams have enough firepower on offense to do such. Green Bay has been bit by the injury bug all season, but as long as they have that man at QB, then they can win any game. Don’t sell Dallas QB Dak Prescott short though, as he has the ability and poise to keep up in a shootout. This will be a big game for Dallas to not only keep up in the NFC East, but to let the NFC know that they aren’t going anywhere. Dallas makes a statement, as they barely get revenge, 32-31.
