Stevan Jovetic could make a return to the Premier League to join either Newcastle or Brighton, according to Sky Sports. The striker spent last season on loan from Inter Milan at Sevilla in La Liga and has been told by the Italian side that he can leave this summer.
Jovetic’s Premier League history
The former Fiorentina and Manchester City forward has attracted interest from Ligue 1 champions, Monaco, who are trying to rebuild their first-team squad after many of their key players from last season left for clubs across Europe, including Benjamin Mendy, Bernardo Silva and Tiemoué Bakayoko. However, with two of the promoted Premier League sides showing interest, the Montenegrin could be returning to England.
Jovetic came to the Premier League in 2013 but struggled to establish as a regular in Manuel Pellegrini and subsequently went out on loan to Inter in the 2015/16 campaign. In his 28 Premier League appearances for City, the Montenegro international netted eight goals. The attacker went straight out on loan last season from Italy to Sevilla where he made 21 appearances, scoring six goals in the process.
Tyne time for Jovetic?
Now, Jovetic could make a return to the Premier League with Rafa Benitez and Chris Hughton interested in signing him.
Since coming up from the Championship, Benitez’s Newcastle have found life back in the top flight very hard, losing their opening games before beating West Ham 3-0 on Saturday. In both of the opening games, Benitez’s side failed to find the back of the net, and Jovetic could strengthen their front line.
The Magpies currently have Dwight Gayle leading the line, who scored 23 goals in the Championship last season. Newcastle also have Aleksandar Mitrovic as a different option on the bench. However, Jovetic would give Benitez a quality alternative to Gayle or he could move away from a 4-2-3-1 formation and try to accommodate the two strikers together in a 4-4-2 or a 3-5-2.
Brighton’s new number 9?
Also in the hunt for the former City striker are Brighton. They too have had a tough time in their opening games, suffering two 2-0 loses to Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City and Leicester City.
This is the first time Brighton have been in the Premier League and Hughton will be very aware that strengthening his squad is a key part of ensuring survival. Brighton have started the season with 33-year-old Glenn Murray leading the line, however, Hughton has other options at his disposal including 20-year-old Chelsea loanee Isaiah Brown.
Like Benitez, Hughton also likes to play with one up top and if they were to land Jovetic, it is likely he would be the man to claim the striker spot for the Seagulls.
Jovetic is still only 27, despite having played for Partizan Belgrade, Fiorentina, Manchester City and Sevilla in his career and would bring goals and experience to both Newcastle or Brighton.
