Another working week is in the books as the weekend caps things off with several world class championship fights. Let’s take a closer look…
1 "Boo Boo" moves up to middleweight.
Still undefeated, former junior-middleweight champion Demetrius "Boo Boo" Andrade makes his middleweight debut this weekend against Alantez Fox. Andrade (24-0, 16 KO) made a reputation for himself at 154lbs as a lanky, dangerous, intelligent fighter who could rule the pound-for-pound rankings.
Despite his skill, Andrade failed to secure big fights with the division's bigger names such as the Charlo twins, Erislandy Lara, and Austin Trout. Andrade hopes that a dominating victory this weekend could put him in the running for a fight with middleweights heavy hitters such as Billy Joe Saunders, Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin.
2 Is Cecilia Braekhus the top female fighter on the planet?
They may call her the "first lady" but Cecilia Braekhus is the queen of women's boxing. This weekend, her crown is on the line against Mikaela Lauren. Lauren (29-4 13 KO) is a familiar foe for Braekhus (31-0 8 KO).
Braekhus TKO'd Lauren in 2010 when Lauren was only six fights deep into her career. Braekhus has been so dominant in her career she's had to re-clean out her division. A thrilling knockout this weekend could be what she needs to cement herself as the best female boxer on the planet.
3 Can Jezreel Corrales become a household name at 130lbs?
Stars are coming out of the junior-lightweight division left, right and centre. Vasyl Lomachenko, Gervonta Davis, and Tevin Farmer have all put the division on notice but there's another solid fighter worth mentioning in that discussion: Jezreel Corrales.
The Panamanian southpaw is smooth behind a philly shell and an awkward left cross. He has got a big opportunity this weekend to increase his stock when he defends his belt against Alberto Machado on HBO's 'Boxing After Dark'.
4 Is Burnett ready for bantamweight unification?
Everybody loves unification bouts and there's a good one in the bantamweight division this weekend when Ryan Burnett puts his IBF belt on the line for Zhanat Zhakiyanov's WBA title.
Burnett (17-0 9 KOs) just won his belt in June and many people wonder if the Irishman's ready for someone of Zhakiyanov's calibre. With Zhakiyanov's trainer Ricky "The Hitman" Hatton formerly coaching Burnett as a youngster, this fight has plenty of sub-plots in Belfast.
5 Boxing movie classic triple-header on SHOWTIME
One thing that has made the sweet science so beloved over the generations is its portrayal on the silver screen. SHOWTIME is putting on three boxing movie masterpieces Friday starting at 10:45 a.m. back-to-back-to-back.
Starting with 'The Hurricane', then transitioning to modern day epic, 'Bleed for This' and rounding things out with 'Cinderella Man'.
