It’s Friday the 13th and boxing’s got a frightening amount of great fights this weekend here’s what you should look out for…
1 Austin Trout: Contender or has-been?
Austin Trout faces Jarrett Hurd this weekend for the IBF title on a card that features six of the best junior middleweights in the world. Fighting Hurd, the youngest champion in the division, will give Trout his best shot at regaining the title he held from 2011-2013. However, if he loses we can finally say Austin Trout's days as a serious contender are over.
2 Is the "Hammer" ready for the stage?
Erickson Lubin, one of the more impressive young fighters in the world today, will battle Jermell Charlo also on the stacked SHOWTIME card featuring three junior middleweight championship fights. Lubin has dominated everyone put in front of him but many wonders if he is he ready for a Charlo. Jermell is seen by many as the more flawed twin but make no mistake, he is one of the best junior middleweights in the world. The "Hammer" does not have his work cut out for him in this one.
3 Is Erislandy Lara a draw?
We all know Erislandy Lara can fight, but the question is does anybody care? Lara is the main event for the card on Saturday but many would say the Charlo/Lubin fight outranks Lara's rumble with former U.S. Olympian, Terrell Gausha. Lara has said numerous times that his goal is to avenge his one true loss to Canelo Alvarez. Canelo is the biggest star in the boxing world right now and if Lara can't steal the show Saturday night, I'm sure the red-headed superstar won't give a second thought to Lara's rematch demands.
4 The prequel to Santa Cruz vs Mares?
The mysterious Al Haymon and PBC are putting on a card this weekend on FOX that features featherweight superstars Leo Santa Cruz and Abner Mares. The catch is they aren't fighting each other.. or are they? Santa Cruz and Mares have title defences of their own that night, but don't be surprised if each fighter takes care of business then announces the rematch the world has been craving.
5 George Groves' road to the finals
The World Boxing Super Series continues this weekend when George Groves faces Jamie Cox. The winner is set to face Chris Eubank Jr. in the semi-finals in what would be the first decent fight of the tournament. Groves should handle business and then expected to come face to face with his next opponent.
