Australia 0-2 Peru: 5 things we learned

In the event, the game between Australia and Peru turned out to be a dead rubber as their Group C rivals, France and Denmark, flaked their way to a 0-0 draw.

Although they came into this one as favourites, Peru were not exactly convincing in their win. Australia created chances throughout the game and Bert van Marwijk will look back on missed opportunities wondering if his team could have picked up all three points.

But, as everyone knows, it is goals that win games not chances and it was Peru who picked up both of the goals that this game had to offer: Andre Carrillo with a sumptuous volley at the back of the box and that man Paolo Guerrero hooking one in early in the second half.

With the two teams who progress from Group C having got there playing a fairly mundane brand of football, there will be many people disappointed that Peru didn't get further in the competition. For Australia, though, questions will be asked about whether or not they were infected with the same sorts of conservatism that served Denmark and France so well.
