14:30 (BST); Saturday 30th September; WWK Arena (Augsburg, Germany)
Augsburg see themselves high in the standings as they welcome the league leaders to the WWK Arena.
Borussia Dortmund have been close to perfect in the Bundesliga as they have won five of their first six clashes, whilst only conceding a single goal last time out against Borussia Mönchengladbach.
Their endeavours in the Champions League have been less than ideal, however, with defeats at the hands of Tottenham and Real Madrid.
The hosts have been excellent at both ends of the pitch with a strong attacking core, whilst their defence has been assured of their task as they’ve only conceded only four times in their opening six games.
Two of the best defensive sides go head-to-head in what will be an intriguing encounter in Bavaria.
Last time out
Stuttgart 0-0 AUGSBURG [Bundesliga]
Augsburg made the short journey to Stuttgart looking to make it five games unbeaten in the Bundesliga.
Stuttgart started the brighter of the two sides when Simon Terodde came close, but a good challenge from Ja-Cheol Koo denied him.
Rani Khedira came close to opening the scoring before halftime, but Ron-Robert Zieler was up to the task too.
Chances were limited as Augsburg had to settle for a point in Stuttgart.
BORUSSIA DORTMUND 1-3 Real Madrid [Champions League]
The biggest game of the Tuesday night fixtures in the Champions League had the Bundesliga leaders host Real Madrid.
It was the perfect start from Real Madrid who took the lead inside 20 minutes when Gareth Bale’s excellent volley beat a helpless Roman Bürki.
Just after halftime Cristiano Ronaldo doubled Madrid’s lead when he nodded home Bale’s cross to give Los Blancos a comfortable lead.
There was a fightback from Dortmund when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang got his name on the scoresheet which gave the hosts belief of a comeback.
However, it wasn’t to be when Ronaldo scored his second of the game, a powerful finish at Burki’s near post, to secure the points for Real Madrid and leave Dortmund pointless from two European games.
Manuel Baum provided an unconvincing display going forward as Augsburg were more than happy to play a 5-4-1. This time around we shall see Augsburg return to the more conventional 4-2-3-1.
Michael Gregoritsch returns to the starting XI to play the number ten role behind Alfred Finnbogason.
Daniel Baier returns to the side, too, after being rested on the weekend, whilst Ja-Cheol Koo will miss due to injury.
Borussia Dortmund Lineup
After more disappointment in the Champions League, Peter Bosz will look for his side to regroup as they make the trip to Augsburg.
Marc Bartra is back after missing the previous month through injury, and he has a chance of starting on Saturday.
Dan-Axel Zagadou is likely to start at left-back as he replaces Jeremy Toljan. Julian Weigl is set to make his first start this season with Mario Götze dropping to the bench.
Key Battle: Michael Gregoritsch vs Julian Weigl
The Austrian international has contributed well since joining from Hamburg in the summer transfer window, with a goal and an assist from his five appearances in Manuel Baum’s side.
The attacking midfielder has found a home with Augsburg and has become a first-team regular. Although Gregoritsch was a second-half substitute last time out, look for the Austrian to have an influence for Augsburg on Saturday.
Julian Weigl is yet to make a start with Borussia Dortmund this season but should make his eventual return after making multiple appearances off the bench.
The partnership with Nuri Sahin will be pivotal, but it’s guaranteed that the German midfielder will pull the strings in midfield.
If Weigl controls the game, it will be a long day for Gregoritsch and Augsburg.
Augsburg have been a surprising threat going forward, and it’s their ability to create and convert which sees them in the top six of the Bundesliga heading into Week 7.
This season, Augsburg have had the seventh most shots in the Bundesliga (78), with 40% hitting the target.
Alfred Finnbogason has carried the scoring load this season with four goals, but if the likes of Michael Gregoritsch and Caiuby can add to the scoring threat, Augsburg have a chance.
Borussia Dortmund have had it relatively easy in the Bundesliga as they sit atop of the table whilst only conceding once this season.
The defensive four have done their jobs with ease as Dortmund’s midfield have completely bossed their opponents around.
Perhaps this could explain their defensive disasters in the Champions League as they have conceded six in their opening two fixtures. Will Dortmund remain untested against Augsburg?
PREDICTION: Augsburg 0-3 Borussia Dortmund
One hopes that Augsburg don’t retreat into their shell and allow Borussia Dortmund to sustain pressure from the outset.
What has made Augsburg such an enjoyable team to watch has been their desire and endeavour to go forward and create chances, hence why they are fifth at the moment.
Dortmund will have plenty of motivation after once again failing in midweek and they will be back to their best I suspect.
Augsburg will need to be at their best too, but even still it will be Dortmund who take the three points at the WWK Arena.
Can Augsburg continue their five-game unbeaten streak or will Borussia Dortmund return to the comforts of the Bundesliga with a win? Let us know in the comments section below.
