Arsenal: Jack Wilshere new contract is a huge boost

Jack Wilshere has had a bit of a roller coaster career so far. Once touted as the future of England’s international set up and as an Arsenal captain, Wilshere has yet to hit those heights.

There can be no question of his skill and talent but he has been very unlucky with injuries and his temperament has been questioned on a number of occasions. 

With his contract set to expire and Arsene Wenger leaving the club, it looked highly likely that Wilshere would part ways and embark on a new chapter in his career. However, according to Sky Sports, he has nearly agreed on a new three-year deal. 

A positive move

Wilshere needed a fresh start and there can be no denying that he has yet to reach the levels he has shown on a regular basis. 

But now the fresh start can come with Arsenal. Whoever becomes the new boss at the Emirates will have the opportunity to reassess the squad and build a team around Wilshere.

If Arsenal had lost him on a free transfer to one of their rivals, then it would have been a bitter blow for not only the club, but to whoever takes the reins. 

Final chance to be a star

When Wilshere initially burst onto the scene in 2008 at just 16 years old he was cited as a ‘wonderkid’. 

His youthfulness, passing and nastiness made him a player that was surely primed to lead Arsenal’s midfield for the next two decades. 

While this has not proven to be the case of of yet, this new contract will give Wilshere that opportunity to make up for lost time. 

This past season he played arguably his most consistent football since the 2013/14 season. In fact, he played the most games in a season since 2010/11 this year which is great for a player that has often struggled for fitness.

Since playing 35 games in 2010/11 Wilshere has only suited up for 129 Premier League games out of a possible 266. Less than half. 

After missing out on the World Cup squad Wilshere will undoubtedly have a chip on his shoulder that he can only rectify by putting in the best performances of his career to prove it was a mistake. 

This new contract marks a new start for Wilshere and he will no doubt be hoping that this new era will be kinder to him than previous years have been.
