Call of Duty: Modern Warfare tops UK Christmas Chart,
fighting off Star Wars & FIFA 20

The UKIE/GfK Top 40 currently features nine Mario-related games - will any of them take the crown?

We are one week away from naming 2019's Christmas No.1 game, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is currently in prime position to pick up the crown.

Activision's stunning shooter returns to the summit of the UK charts despite a 10% drop in sales last week.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is on track to take the crown

The title replaces FIFA 20, which falls to the No.3 spot after sales slipped 41% the previous week.

A surprise entry in the chart, Star Wars: Fallen Order is currently sitting at No.2

Call of Duty was also only a few thousand sales ahead of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, which is probably benefitting from the excitement around the upcoming Star Wars movie -- The Rise of Skywalker.

Sales for the game have risen by an average of 30% week-on-week, and if it manages to pull it off for another week (not unthinkable with the release of the movie), it might be a rare year where neither Call of Duty nor FIFA take home the crown.

As an outside bet for Christmas No.1 is Mario Kart 8: Deluxe, which has enjoyed a very strong month following the launch of a special Nintendo Switch bundle.

You can always bet on Mario entry finding its way into the Christmas charts

That said, the game’s week-on-week sales are down 30%, so it would be a bit of a surprise if the game manages to create an upset.

Luigi's Mansion 3 has been a real hit for Nintendo this Christmas.

Even Luigi couldn't have expected to place so far up the Top 40 chart

Although it doesn't match the sales of Pokemon Sword and Shield, the puzzle adventure game has far exceeded previous games in the franchise, and has sold more copies than other popular Switch games this year.

If you include Luigi's Mansion and Super Smash Bros, there are nine Mario games in this week's UK Top 40 – quite the monopoly.

Stay tuned to find out which game tops the charts for Christmas 2019.
