What is the Ryder Cup?


The Ryder Cup is one of the key events in the golfing calendar, one which pits the best players from Europe up against the best players from the United States.

What is the Ryder Cup?

First established in 1927, the Ryder Cup is a biennial golf competition in which the best players from Europe take on the best players from the United States in a number of different matchplay competitions.

The tournament features two teams of twelve players and takes place from Friday until Sunday. A total of 28 matches are played across the three days across three different formats: foursomes, fourballs and singles.

Each match is worth one point to the winning team, each team is awarded a half point if the match is tied after 18 holes.

There is no playoff format in the Ryder Cup. If the competition is tied 14-14 after 28 matches then the Ryder Cup is retained by the team who entered the contest as the defending champions.

When is the next Ryder Cup?

The next Ryder Cup will take place from 29th September-1st October 2023, and will be held in Rome, Italy.

The event will be held at the Marco Simeone Golf and Country Club, a venue which has recently undergone extensive renovation work.

Henrik Stenson will captain Team Europe in their home event, whilst Zach Johnson will lead Team USA into battle in Rome.
