RealSport Meets... Andy C: West Ham Edition

There are few names that are more highly regarded in the world of Drum and Bass than Andy C.

In a scene that is constantly changing with countless styles and sub-genres emerging, no other DJ has managed to dominate festival line ups and award shows quite like him. The pioneering selector, real name Andrew Clarke, first came into the spotlight in 1993 off the back of the seminal track ‘Valley of the Shadows’, which he produced with Ant Miles under the moniker ‘Origin Unknown’.

One aspect of Andy’s life that fans might not be aware of is his passion for West Ham United. He is a third generation season ticket holder and has followed the Hammers for nearly four decades, witnessing the agony of relegation along with the ecstasy of an FA Cup win and play-off victories.

RealSport met up with him at his spiritual home of Upton Park as he took a tour of the ground before the club moves to the spectacular Olympic Stadium at the end of the season after spending 112 years at the Boleyn Ground. We asked Andy what he thinks about the move as well his thoughts on West Ham’s whirlwind of a season, his favourite moments as a Hammer, away days, and whether or not Andy Carroll should go to the Euros this summer.

Andy is head honcho of RAM Records, a label he initially set up back in 1992 which has gone on to be one of the biggest in Drum and Bass, boasting releases from heavyweights such as Chase & Status, Wilkinson and Sub Focus.

He has achieved success as a producer reaching the top of the UK Dance Chart in 2001 for ‘Body Rock’ a track he produced with long-time collaborator Shimon, in addition to creating huge remixes for the likes of Busta Rhymes, and Major Lazer.

He has won ‘Best DJ’ at the National Drum and Bass Awards every year since the inaugural ceremony back in 2007 and has scooped the same accolade at the later formed Drum & Bass Arena Awards for seven consecutive years alongside being inducted into their hall of fame. He was also voted fourth in Mixmag’s ‘Greatest DJ of All Time’ survey after being the only Drum and Bass artist in contention for the title.
