A big day for driving games!

Cross-platform. It’s a feature that is somewhat of a given across the gaming world now. However, it hasn’t found itself as a mainstay in the racing game genre.

EA seem set to change that, with their official announcement trailer for Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit Remastered the inclusion of cross-platform multiplayer in the new game.

Need For Speed leads the way

EA has spent the weekend teasing the release of the latest instalment of the NFS franchise.

Whilst a number of leaks also occurred, even as early as August, today was the day that we finally saw for ourselves the confirmation of a remaster for the 2010 hit, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit.

This happened on their YouTube channel, with a short video showcasing the various features of the new game, including enhanced visuals, all DLC included as well as the genre-bending, cross-platform multiplayer.

What does this mean for racing games?

Well, with this announcement from EA comes the expectation for other racing games to follow suit and begin the change to true, multiplayer gaming, regardless of the players platform of choice.

This isn't even the first NFS game to get crossplay, as it was added to the 2019 release NFS Heat earlier this year.

CATCH ME IF YOU CAN: Supercars doing crazy things is the key for any NFS game

The fact that it is Need For Speed that is driving the crossplay era for racing games and not Codemasters or 505 Games is remarkable really.

Whilst we are sure console exclusives, such as Gran Turismo and Forza, will naturally ignore this call to arms against brand exclusivity, we are certain that other developers of driving games will see the necessity for the feature moving forward.

A big day for driving games!

So, after such an exciting feature announcement for NFS: Hot Pursuit Remastered, we are more excited than ever to see what other features developers will aim to explore moving forward into next-gen console gaming.

NFS: Hot Pursuit will drop on 6 November for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. It will come to Nintendo Switch on 13 November.
