Horizon Forbidden West: How to Unlock The Shining Wastes Tallneck

Horizon Forbidden West's open world is an absolute joy to explore, but it takes some work to fully reveal. Much like in Zero Dawn, you need to override Tallnecks to reveal your surroundings and some of the map's secrets. Some of those Tallnecks aren't so simple to override, though. If you're confused, here's how to unlock the Shining Wastes Tallneck in Horizon Forbidden West.

Tallnecks Explained

As was the case in Guerilla's first game, Horizon Forbidden West's map is shrouded in two levels of fog. The thick level is removed by overriding tallnecks and the thin level is removed by simply heading to that place in the world.

Therefore, you'll want to head out and override the Tallnecks as soon as you can.

How to Unlock The Shining Wastes Tallneck in Horizon Forbidden West

The Shining Wastes Tallneck is the second one you'll come across in Forbidden West, right in the middle of the map.

However, once you approach it, you'll find that it's in a big open area with no obvious way to climb it. Then, shortly after, the Tallneck's icon will be locked on the overworld map, showing that you cannot complete it yet.

We'll run through what you actually have to do below, but be aware, there will be some spoilers for later in Horizon Forbidden West's story.

What you need to do is keep playing through the story quests until you reach one called The Wings of the Ten, which is actually one of the final ones in the game.

Hear us out, Aloy will learn to fly as part of the quest - we won't explain exactly how to avoid too many spoliers, but that'll help you override the Shining Wastes Tallneck.

As part of the Wings of the Ten quest, you'll be led to the Tallneck to override it. It's part of the objectives, so don't worry about missing it. Just follow along with the quest instructions and you'll be able to override it.

All you need to know is that you cannot unlock the Shining Wastes Tallneck in Horizon Forbidden West Tallneck before this point. It'll be locked on your map right up to this point, so don't bother trying to override it in any other way. It'll happen eventually, just stay patient.
