Overwatch 2 - SMS protect returns... but it's much better


Overwatch 2 has had a rocky release and first few months but with SMS protection returning. Can it get any better?

Surprisingly... the answer is yes! Despite the SMS protection returning, all players will be able to access it.

Before this announcement, Blizzard made it so that only people without pre-paid phones could play the game.

This caused much anger within the Overwatch community and fans were disappointed all around.

However, this defence matrix has been brought back again but this time with some welcomed changes.

Blizzard Change SMS Protection

So, as it stands, Blizzard is bringing back SMS protection to help them develop a better community.

SMS protection provides some 2-factor authentification but also discourages players from being toxic to the rest of the community.

The changes arriving to the game soon state that pre-paid phones will now be able to play the game.

All players are required to go through the SMS protection protocol. However, now every Overwatch fan is able to.

A blog post by Community Manager, Andy B shared the company's views on this on the official Blizzard website.

Players' Reactions to SMS Protection in Overwatch 2

Many fans are still not happy with how this scheme is still being rolled out despite the community.

They feel that SMS protection is just another way to gather personal information.

Additionally, many are questioning whether Overwatch is really a free-to-play game if you require a phone.

However, maybe now that Blizzard has listened to the community and changed this, more changes will be coming soon.

It feels like the community is wishing for the phone verification to be removed quickly.
