Pokemon Legends: Arceus is a pretty ambitious take on the Pokemon formula and with that change comes plenty of questions. If you're looking to get your starter Pokemon in shiny form, this is what you should know.
Are starters shiny-locked in Pokemon Legends Arceus?
Centro Leaks is a big Pokemon leaker well known for their accurate information. It seems likely that what they know is due to the fact that Pokemon Legends: Arceus released up to a week early in certain regions. They have had their hands on the game for the last week.
In the most recent leak, they have claimed that Arceus, Dialga, Palkia, Giratina and all the starters you receive are shiny-locked. You receive them from the professor so this makes sense. As well as this, Unown are shiny-locked.
Alongside this, they clarified that, whilst the starter Pokemon can technically be caught shiny, the professor will only give you the standard version. It seems likely that this isn't a conscious choice from Game Freak and just a result of the way the game has been made.
As well as this, another Pokemon analyst named Abyzab has claimed the code of the game itself determines this. They also clarified in the same thread that the game could still see a day one patch, changing this. While it is likely all of this is true right now, we may just have to wait until launch to find out.
