While most draft grades don’t change a great deal as a result of the Combine, the data acquired certainly is an important part of the process, and performances can result in going back to the tape and re-evaluating as and where unexpected testing results occurred. That, alongside further work in general on game film, means that the RealSport draft board looks a little different post-Combine.
The previous version of the board, released in January, gives some details on the reasoning behind grades on the top 20 prospects as they were ordered at the time. In addition, notes on other players at several positions (wide receiver, guard, defensive line and cornerback so far) have been given in our continuing Top 10 series. Please use this information, linked below, to read further on those players, as opposed to duplicating the writeups again here.
One of the biggest changes to an individual player grade, is that of Oklahoma offensive tackle Orlando Brown, after his now-infamous showing at the Combine. A few notes on him and his grading. Firstly, unlike many, he never held a particularly high grade for me. He held a late 2nd-round grade on the January board, and even that was a little begrudgingly, as his film felt more third round worthy at the time.
While nobody expected him to be athletic, few saw him being that poor looking in Indianapolis; it was genuinely shocking. While some will feel he either should maintain a good grade or only drop slightly, if those people liked his film, there’s cause to consider a larger drop, such as in the high 4th-round grade he now holds with RealSport.
A few years ago, LSU right tackle Vadal Alexander was viewed for a while as a Day 2 prospect. Very early on for some he even had some suggestions of a first round guard prospect. He tested very poorly at the Combine and eventually landed in the 7th round. USC guard Damien Mama had a similarly unathletic performance and went from a possible mid-round prospect for some, to undrafted in the end. It remains to see how things will go for Brown, but the stock drop for many can be argued.
There’s still a bit further to go in this draft process before the big event at the end of April. The final version of the draft board will inevitably have some further changes. The Top 10 series will continue over the next couple weeks and then be built upon with a full position by position ranking series. We’ll also have mock drafts and other features to add to the coverage over the next six weeks. We hope everyone is enjoying draft season so far!
