With progress to the Round of 16 on the line for both sides, Monday night's encounter at the Mordovia Arena would never be short of drama and excitement. 

Refereeing nightmares, VAR referrals, penalty shouts and debatable decision-making... this game had it all. 

Spain's clash with Morocco in Group B's other game which was unfolding concurrently wasn't short on its share of talking points either, as an injury-time Iago Aspas goal salvaged a point for the Spaniards. 

The two draws meant that both Spain and Portugal clung onto the Round of 16 berths by the finest of margins.
