SummerSlam was a night of new champions. The main event was arguably the best main event of SummerSlam since 2013. There were a lot of bad moments, but this is all about the good moments. I may have missed a few but these are the ones I caught.
1 SmackDown Tag Team Championships Match
The final match of the pre-show saw The New Day’s Big E & Kofi Kingston defend the SmackDown Tag Team Championships against The Usos. This was on the pre-show and it was arguably one of the best matches of the night. This match had a lot of back and forth action that saw many near-falls for each team. Despite being relegated to the Kickoff Show, they had one of the best tag team matches of the year.
2 New champions, new champions everywhere
This was a good night if you were challenging for a championship. Neville and The Usos both regained their respective titles on the pre-show, Natalya won the SmackDown Women’s Championship, Sasha Banks won the Raw Women’s Championship, and Dean Ambrose & Seth Rollins won the RAW Tag Team Championships. Crowning new champions opens up a lot of avenues for new storylines, and with Sasha winning the RAW Women’s Championship, that means we could end up finally having Sasha v Bayley down the road.
3 The Demon King
It was a year since we saw The Demon King and it finally happened. Finn Balor as The Demon King is something we look forward to all year long. The entrance was amazing and the match was pretty good, ending with Balor hitting Bray with the Coup de Grace to pick up the victory. I personally cannot wait until the next time we see The Demon King.
4 That No Mercy promo
Halfway through SummerSlam, the promo for the next Raw pay-per-view No Mercy was revealed. Alexa Bliss is the featured star in the promo which shows that Alexa is not going to leave the Women’s Championship picture anytime soon. It was a great promo and maybe, one of my favourite pay-per-view promos this year.
5 Universal Championship Match
The best match of the night was definitely the Universal Championship match. Brock Lesnar, Braun Strowman, Roman Reigns and Samoa Joe tore the roof off the Barclays Center. Brock winning was a good choice, even though other people could argue that having Braun or Joe win would’ve been better. This match made all four stars look amazing. Braun putting Brock through two announce tables made Strowman look like an absolute beast. This match has to be the best SummerSlam main event since 2013 when Daniel Bryan faced John Cena.
