Last week was a massive one for NXT, as it was formally announced that The Undisputed Era, SAnitY and the team of Authors of Pain and Roderick Strong would compete in the first WarGames match in 20 years.
This week’s broadcast had a lot to live up to as it needed to build the three-way match while also hyping the stipulation itself to an audience that may not be familiar with the match format. Fortunately, NXT succeeded in doing both as we saw a chaotic main event between Adam Cole and Roderick Strong, as well as a very well-produced video package hyping WarGames as a concept.
Elsewhere, we saw more of The Velveteen Dream, some hype for the go-home show next week, as well as another match being announced for NXT Takeover: WarGames.
Kassius Ohno vs Lars Sullivan at Takeover: WarGames
With just two weeks left until NXT Takeover: WarGames, another match for the show was formally announced this week on NXT.
During a backstage interview, Kassius Ohno told William Regal that he wants to reenter the NXT Championship picture before making a challenge for a match to prove himself worthy at Takeover.
At NXT Takeover: WarGames, it will be Kassius Ohno vs Lars Sullivan. It will likely be this match or the women’s fatal-four-way that will open the show next Saturday.
The decision to book this match is an interesting one, as the outcome is rather unpredictable. On one hand, it’s easy to see Ohno going over Sullivan as a way to start a push towards the NXT Title. However, it would seem quite strange for NXT to build Sullivan up as much as they have only for him to lose to Ohno in a match without any build.
Last week, fans learned that WarGames would be brought back for the first time in 20 years at NXT Takeover: War Games with SAnitY, The Undisputed Era and the team of the Authors of Pain and Roderick Strong face off inside the titular structure.
This week, with less than two weeks away from Takeover, we were presented with a video package hyping the match. The package played up the history and brutality of the structure, while also taking a moment to pay tribute to its creator – Dusty Rhodes.
The video featured interviews with Booker T, Arn Anderson and Dustin Rhodes, all of whom emphasized the idea that nobody wins WarGames, they merely survive WarGames. The video also featured footage from numerous past WarGames matches, which went towards playing up the history of the gimmick, all of which portrayed just how special a match it is.
Adam Cole vs Roderick Strong turns chaotic in a hurry
The night’s main event pitted Adam Cole against Roderick Strong in the former’s second solo match in WWE. Thankfully, this outing was far better than his match against Eric Young.
Adam Cole vs Roderick Strong was a very fun, hard-hitting, lightning quick affair with both men trading offense back-and-forth for the duration of the bout. It was Adam Cole’s best performance in a WWE ring so far as Strong brought the very best out of a man that he has wrestled so often over the course of their respective careers.
The match wouldn’t have a clean finish however, as Kyle O’Reilly and Bobby Fish pulled Roderick Strong out of the ring after he hit Cole with a scary looking back breaker on the top turnbuckle. This brought out the Authors of Pain, followed shortly thereafter by SAnitY.
This led to a massive brawl inside and outside the ring, all of which resulted in Roderick Strong hitting Adam Cole with a superplex off the top rope to the other men outside the ring.
An awesome final match and segment to build what promises to be NXT’s most chaotic match to date a week from Saturday.
- Next week promises to be a very busy go-home show for NXT. We will see Ember Moon vs Mercedes Martinez in the next step in their little mini-feud, as well as a face-off between NXT Champion Drew McIntyre and his opponent at Takeover – Andrade Cien Almas. Add these segments to the inevitable final confrontation between The Undisputed Era, the Authors of Pain and Roderick Strong, and SAnitY, and you have a jam-packed episode of NXT to look forward to.
