The biggest news going into SmackDown will be the announcement of Brock Lesnar’s opponent at SummerSlam. While the news was not announced live during the taping of this week’s show, a rumor has been leaked that Lesnar is expected to face none other than the returning Randy Orton at SummerSlam. This is unconfirmed, but it’s been noted by sources that it originated from the same Reddit user that broke the story about Shane McMahon’s return back in February, giving this bit of information and added hint of credibility. We’ll know for sure this Thursday.
More dates have been announced for Cody Rhodes on the independent scene, including notable upcoming matches against Zack Sabre Jr, Chris Hero, and Kurt Angle. Most notable is that even though Rhodes has dates as far out as December, not a single one has been announced for Ring of Honor or New Japan Pro Wrestling, both of which are rumored to be “off limits” because of the previously reported false nature of Cody’s release. There is still no confirmation of the theory, but this adds to the situation. You can see a full list of his upcoming appearances here.
The suspension of WWE Hall of Famer Jerry Lawler was recently lifted due to all charges relating to the incident having been dismissed. For those who don’t remember, Lawler was suspended following a domestic violence arrest back in June. He was seen at this week’s SmackDown tapings and is expected back on commentary when SmackDown airs this Thursday. However, there is no word on if the SmackDown commentary team will remain unchanged after the draft.
With the WWE Draft drawing near, yet another former WWE star has joined the conversation for potentially returning to active competition. James Yun, formerly WWE Superstar Jimmy Wang Yang, posted a photo to social media during Raw that implied he was having a meeting with Vince McMahon. While Yun could’ve just been visiting old friends, he could be brought back in, especially if the rumored plans of a Cruiserweight Championship are true.
Some reports have come out of the WWE SmackDown tapings that Enzo Amore took what has been described as a “horrible fall” during his match. A local sports anchor who was in attendance at the tapings in Toledo, Ohio stated that Enzo caught the ropes while attempting a suicide dive. There has been no official injury release, but this is an alarming note considering Enzo’s concussion history. Hopefully, this won’t interfere in any way with the upcoming six-man tag at Battleground.
