When the Women’s Revolution started in 2015, Natalya was totally excluded from the movement and did not see significant action up until Team Bella, Team B.A.D, and Team PCB all went their separate ways and feuds. Her patience though was rewarded when she was one of Charlotte Flair’s first major feuds since unifying the Divas Title with the reintroduced Women’s Title.
She faced Charlotte Flair for the Women’s Championship at Battleground 2016 in a losing effort. The feud saw Natalya significantly make strides in improving both her character and mic skills as the in-ring ability was already there.
It wasn’t until her latest heel turn where we saw the best Natalya ever. Her character was despicable and her talking is just so convincing.
Getting drafted to SmackDown Live helped Natalya a lot as she was booked to feud with Becky Lynch for being drafted ahead of her, a returning Nikki Bella where we saw Natalya’s proficiency as a heel especially on the microphone to being part of the Welcoming Committee feuding with the likes of new arrival Charlotte Flair.
Natalya has even added some entitlement to her arsenal ripping off her uncle Bret Hart’s lines and stating that she is just as great and how the entire women’s division must pay their respect.
The Land of Opportunity
Naomi’s second reign as SmackDown Women’s champion made her a Brock Lesnar-esque character where she only competes in a match on special occasions which meant that her reign as champion has been stale given the fact that we see her on TV weekly compared to Lesnar who appears twice a month at most.
There are a plethora of interesting storylines Naomi can be put in especially with the budding push that Tamina is to receive under the tutelage of Lana (who Naomi defeated in a title match thrice). Becky Lynch was the inaugural SmackDown Women’s Champion, Alexa Bliss held it twice before departing for Raw, Charlotte had her match interrupted by the Welcoming Committee and could have her time again soon but right now, it is Natalya’s turn in the rotation as she faces Naomi for the title at SummerSlam which brings us to…
Will Natalya finally capture the Women’s Championship?
The WWE Universe wanting Naomi to drop the title despite still being a fan of her shows how stale her title run has been. Her title run has been stale on a brand where champions are often fighting.
If the WWE wants to follow through with their faith in Natalya as the division’s top heel, they must let her win the SmackDown Women’s championship at SummerSlam. Fans of the Queen of Harts have been clamoring for another Natalya title run for a very long time which is why she is definitely going to receive a lot of “you deserve it” chants no matter how entitled or obnoxious her victory promo is on the first SmackDown Live after SummerSlam.
WWE has been known to create buzz when it comes to title changes as AJ Styles won the United States Title in a house show, Raw’s Akira Tozawa pulled out the surprise of the week when he captured the Cruiserweight Title just a week before his scheduled match with Neville at SummerSlam. A win for Natalya would be no different in creating buzz due to the fact that she has never held WWE gold since 2010 and would give fans a new product on television having the belt around somebody else’s waist.
So if all of these things are to be put into consideration, signs point to Natalya finally capturing the Women’s Championship at SummerSlam so we’ll give that a definitive YES for now.
But will she walk out of Brooklyn with the title?
A Natalya-Carmella feud has been teased for quite some time now and with the Princess of Staten Island teasing a cash-in of her Money in the Bank contract, signs point to Natalya finally winning WWE gold after a seven-year drought only for Carmella to spoil the moment with an inopportune cash-in.
Now that we have seen the flexibility of Natalya’s character, turning her back to babyface is no problem and cash-in would give Carmella more heel heat. With the budding storyline of Tamina and Lana rallying for a title match, there are enough heels in the Women’s Division of SmackDown Live to move forward with some new content.
Either a cash-in or Natalya feuding with Tamina for the belt sometime down the line, the bottom line is Natalya will win that belt at SummerSlam if signs are to be deciphered and it is only a matter of how long she will hold that Women’s Title.
