One year ago today Kevin Owens debuted on Monday Night Raw. Since then the Canadian veteran has looked at home on mondays, far more so than any of his recent NXT counterparts. He is already a piece of the furniture on the main roster. A two-time Intercontinental champion and full time bully Owens has been spectacular in his one year in the big leagues. His is smooth as silk on the mic and in the ring, selling his heel persona with ease. Those familiar with his time on the Independent scene (where he wrestled as Kevin Steen) aren’t surprised by that. His career has been defined by his consistently brilliant talk, be it on the microphone or in the ring during a match. Owens has said several times that his push to become an amazing talker started with bumping into Stone Cold Steve Austin in an airport where the legendary wrestler gave him one piece of advice… “never stop running your mouth”. Owens has taken that to heart and it’s one of the main reasons he has done so well in WWE despite his less than traditional build. He has managed to pull off the rarest of tricks thanks to his talking; entertaining the “smart fans” and keeping the casuals and kids booing him. He even manages to maintain that balance on his twitter account, which is one of the best. But it’s not just on the mic that Owens has been entertaining. That would be to discredit his fantastic ring work. He entered like a house on fire and beat John Cena. He semi-main evented Summerslam with Cesaro and then stole the show at the Royal Rumble with Dean Ambrose. Now Owens is bringing his feud with Sami Zayn to the WWE audience. It’s a feud that helped to make promotions like PWG and Ring of Honor globally known names. It pushed NXT to a new level and now they are bringing excitement to the mid-card of WWE shows. Owens is a favourite to win Money in the Bank next month and be a WWE World Heavyweight champion before too long, and it’s tough to say he doesn’t deserve it. While his debut year may not match the insane highs of Kurt Angle’s or Brock Lesnar’s, Owens has been the best new character WWE have introduced in some time. He debuted with one character and it hasn’t changed one iota. So on the anniversary of his debut, let’s sit back and enjoy John Cena getting taken for a ride on more time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vBiGXrDCKw4
