As we draw closer to WWE’s much anticipated “Cruiserweight Classic” we here at Real Sport are taking a look at some of the competitors that WWE have handpicked from around the world.
Today the man in the spotlight is Johnny Gargano.
Where He Wrestles
Gargano is that rarest of wrestlers; someone who has a contract with NXT but can also wrestle elsewhere. He has been everywhere in American indy Wrestling, from EVOLVE to Chikara, Dragon Gate and Pro Wrestling Guerrilla. Since debuting in 2006 Gargano has become known as one of the best hands around, and genuinely a nice guy. These days Gargano is best known for wrestling in tag teams, with Tommaso Ciampa in NXT, Drew Galloway in Evolve or Chuck Taylor in Chikara. But he can still more than hold his own in singles competition.
Gargano is a real all-rounder. He can do a bit of everything and he can do it well. He is really smooth in his own movements and his chain wrestling, agile enough to execute fast flowing sequences and dives. It’s hard to pigeon-hole “Johnny Wrestling” like we have been able to do with everyone else. Maybe that versatility is what prompted WWE to sign him up.
Gargano has a big first round match with his NXT tag-team partner Tommaso Ciampa, making it hard to project him going forward into the tournament. I think the winner of that match will go pretty far, but I think it will be Ciampa who claims that victory. If he can get past Ciampa though I don’t think Gargano will lose until a semi-final match against Kota Ibushi. He is that good, and already being signed to NXT certainly helps his case.
