As we draw closer to WWE’s much anticipated “Cruiserweight Classic” we here at Real Sport are taking a look at some of the competitors that WWE have handpicked from around the world.
Today the man in the spotlight is Drew Gulak.
Where He Wrestles
Gulak has been a mainstay with Combat Zone Wrestling (CZW) since 2004, helping to turn CZW from a blood and guts promotion into one that is also known for terrific technical wrestling. Gulak has had a run as heavyweight champion with CZW, and is a two-time tag team champion and one-time TV champion there.
As well as wrestling with CZW, Gulak is well known in EVOLVE and had a run as tag champion with Tracy Williams there, he’s also visited Reseda several times for Pro Wrestling Guerrilla (PWG) competing against the likes of Chris Hero, Kyle O’Reilly and Timothy Thatcher.
Gulak is a technician through and through. Heavy strikes and painful holds are the name of the game when Gulak gets in the ring. He can take your head off with a vicious lariat or twist your wrist off while also putting you in a knee bar. I said that Zack Sabre Jr likes to inflict pain with insane holds, so does Gulak.
Gulak has a good chance at winning this tournament. He’s not a universally known face but his long-standing involvement with EVOLVE – who WWE now have a strong working relationship with – stands him in good stead for it. He should certainly make the last 8, and with any luck we’ll get to see him against the likes of Kota Ibushi or Noam Dar as well.
