The Lions pulled off a great comeback to book themselves a spot in the Super Rugby 2017 Final against the Crusaders. Let’s have a look at how the players rated and see which Lions players are on form heading into the biggest club rugby game of the year.
Jaques Van Rooyen – 8 – He scored a try, ran good support lines, and was dominant at the scrum. Can’t ask for more than that.
Malcolm Marx – 8 – Marx was good at the lineouts and scored a try through a maul.
Ruan Dryer – 7 – Dryer was the only front rower not to score but his work at the scrums was exemplary.
Andries Ferreira – 5 – He was pretty anonymous throughout this game and wasn’t able to compete at the lineouts.
Franco Mostert – 7 – He had two steals at the lineout and was generally powerful around the park.
Jaco Kreil – 7 – The captain was involved in everything and was strong at the ruck securing turnovers.
Kwagga Smith – 6 – Smith grew into the game after a very quiet first half. However, in the second half, he was powerful with ball in hand and scored a late try.
Ruan Ackermann – 5 – He managed to compete at the breakdown at times but was outplayed by Brad Shields for large portions.
Ross Cronje – 9 – Cronje controlled the game well and was a big reason for his team’s sustained pressure. He also managed to steal a try on a short dive.
Elton Jantjes – 6 – This was a tumultuous game for Jantjes as he set up the first Hurricanes try by trying to do too much with the ball, but returned to score a try of his own. His all round kicking game was average and without clear direction.
Courtnall Skosan – 5 – Skosan was not noticeable in this game as he did not have any opportunities in attack and usually kicked the ball he did receive.
Harold Vorster – 7 – Vorster was good with ball in hand creating a good break and scoring a try.
Lionel Mapoe – 5 – Like Skosan, Mapoe found himself disappearing in this game which will disappoint the Springbok. More will be needed this weekend.
Ruan Combrinck – 7 – Combrink was dangerous with ball in hand and made clever attacking kicks. He also read the Hurricanes kicking game well.
Andries Coetzee – 6 – His kicking was good, and he ran back the Hurricanes kicks fairly well when the opportunity arrived.
Akker Van Der Merwe – 5
Corne Fourie – 5
Johannes Jonker – 5
Lourens Erasmus – 6
Cyle Brink – 6
Faf de Klerk – 5
Rohan Janse Van Rensburg – 5
Sylvian Mahuza – 5
Ben May – 4 – He was bullied in the scrums and was not impressive around the park. Disappointing.
Dane Coles – 6 – Coles was characteristically strong around the field but did have two lineouts stolen.
Jeff Toomaga-Allen – 5 – Another that struggled in the scrum, but made plenty of tackles around the pitch.
Mark Abbott – 5 – Abbott was unable to make a mark at the lineouts and only took part in the dirty work around the field.
Sam Lousi – 5 – Like Abbott, Lousi struggled to get away from the rucks, spending the day clearing out ball instead of on the attack.
Vaea Fifita – 6 – Fifita was good at the lineout and looked to be involved in every tackle around the park.
Ardie Savea – 8 – Savea made a mess of the Lions’ ball, spoiling it repeatedly. He was also very powerful with ball in hand, scoring a try in the process. A fearsome player to tackle.
Brad Shields – 7 – Shields turned over ball at the rucks, including the one to set up Savea’s try. He did miss a key tackle on one of the Lions’ tries though.
T.J. Perenara – 8 – He did everything he could with limited ball – especially in the second half. Looked very dangerous throughout.
Beauden Barrett – 6 – Barrett was a calming influence throughout and set up a try. However, his harsh yellow card ended up being the root of the Lions winning this game.
Wes Goosen – 8 – Goosen was very dangerous throughout this match, scoring a try. He was generally good in defence too, stopping tries.
Ngani Laumape – 6 – Laumape was good in defence but struggled to impose himself in attack despite grabbing a try. More was expected of him.
Vince Aso – 4 – Aso was anonymous throughout this game and really struggled to make a contribution to the Hurricanes effort. Didn’t look fully fit.
Nehe Milner-Skudder – 7 – Milner-Skudder looked dangerous with ball in hand and his positional work to cover the Lions kicks was good.
Jordie Barrett – 6 – The younger Barrett was solid in this game for the most part, controlling the back three well and catching everything coming his way. However, he kicked the ball out on the full twice which cost the Hurricanes dearly.
Ricky Riccitelli – 5
Chris Eves – 5
Loni Uhila – 4
Reed Prinsep – 5
Callum Gibbins – 6
Te Toiroa Tahuriorangi – 5
Otere Black – 5
Julian Savea – 5
