Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone’s mother-in-law has reportedly been kidnapped in Sao Paulo. The abduction reportedly happened on Friday night and city police have not yet commented.
Those responsible are apparently demanding a £28 million ransom.
Ecclestone, 85, is worth an estimated £2.4 billion so it would be a drop in the ocean. He met his wife, Fabiana Flosi, at the Brazilian Grand Prix and married her in 2012, after divorcing his former wife of 25 years – Croatian model Slavica Radic.
Kidnapping used to be commonplace in Brazil a decade ago, with Sao Paulo seeing an abduction every 27 hours in 2002, but there has been a decline thanks to police forming a special anti-kidnap division and cracking down hard on criminals.
With Brazil just weeks away from hosting the 2016 Olympic Games and experiencing its worst economic crisis for decades there are fears that this may not be the last such incident this summer.
