South African Olympian and Paralympian Oscar Pistorius was sentenced to 6 years in prison for the murder of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in February 2013.
The verdict comes after his initial 5 year manslaughter sentence from December 2015 was appealed.
The biggest surprise coming out of courtroom was that Judge Thokozile Masipa deviated from the prescribed 15-year sentence for murder, disappointing Steenkamp’s family and several women’s rights organisations and other rights groups who have suggested that Pistorius, a wealthy white man and international celebrity, has received preferential treatment compared to others without his status or wealth.
Pistorius, who had come under severe criticism last month after suggesting that Steenkamp would want him to go free, was taken directly to jail after the sentencing. He has already served one year of his initial 5 year sentence and is legally obliged to serve half of his sentence before being eligible for parole.
