Rio 2016 Olympics Women’s Basketball: Day Two

France edge past Belarus as the USA destroy Senegal in day two of the Women's basketball in Rio.


GROUP A

France held off Belarus and won their first game 73-72 on Sunday. Olivia Epoupa led France with 16 points, while Yelena Leuchanka of Belarus had 13 points and 13 rebounds in the loss. Belarus’ next game is on Tuesday against Brazil and France takes on Australia.

In the other Group A game, Australia held off Turkey to win 61-55. Australia was led by Elizabeth Cambage who recorded 22 points and 11 rebounds. Lara Sanders played well for Turkey with 25 points and seven rebounds. Australia will compete against France, and Turkey plays Japan on Tuesday.

GROUP B

The USA women’s team got back to their winning way with a blowout 121-56 win over Senegal. Diana Taurasi scored 15 points and went 5/7 shooting from beyond the arc. Breanna Stewart also chipped in with 15 points. Seven Team USA players scored in double figures in the victory. Senegal was led in scoring by Fatou Dieng with ten points. USA takes on Spain on Monday and Senegal faces China.

In the last Group B game, Spain defeated Serbia 65-59. Astou Ndour stood out for Spain with a double-double (twelve points and eleven rebounds). Even in a loss, Jelena Milovanovic contributed with seventeen points. Serbia’s next game is against Canada and Spain takes on USA, both on Monday.
