After the third round and quarter final action had been postponed due to rain on Wednesday, play resumed on Thursday. Rafael Nadal continued his quest to another gold medal while American starlet Madison Keys puts together another dominant performance to keep her hopes alive of finishing on the podium.
Nadal came up against Frenchman Gilles Simon and after a nervy first set for the Spanish star, he gained control in the second to earn the victory (7-6(5), 6-3). He will now move on to the quarterfinals and face Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci. The days do not get any easier for Nadal as he is aiming to win a pair of gold medals in singles and doubles. In the doubles competition, Nadal and his compatriot Marc Lopez advanced to the final as they edged out Canada’s Daniel Nestor and Vasek Pospisil.
Andy Murray also advanced in the singles competition as he came out victorious against Italy’s Fabio Fognini. The Italian gave Murray a tough test as he dragged the match into the third set, but could not hang on to upset the Wimbledon champ.
Juan Martin Del Potro and Gael Monfils both advanced into the quarterfinals despite dropping their first set in their third round matches.
On the women’s side, number two Angelique Kerber won her quarterfinal match-up in straight sets and will move on to the semifinal.
The only hope for the Americans to win a medal in the tennis singles at these Olympics will be up to Madison Keys as she is set to face Kerber in the semi-final. Keys has impressed this tournament thus far and took out her opponent, Daria Kasatkina in straight sets in the quarter-final match-up.
The second semi-final match-up will be Petra Kvitova and Monica Puig as they comfortably defeated their quarterfinal opponents.
