Rio 2016 Olympics Men’s Basketball: Day one recap

USA begin their campaign with a routine win, as France surprisingly falter on the first day.

Group A features Team USA, France, Serbia and Argentina. Only the top four teams of each in the preliminaries move onto the quarter finals. The top seed from each group will face the fourth-seeds, while the second seeds will face the third seeds from the opposite group.

Australia is the eleventh ranked team in the world, and they are trying to claim one of top four spots spots in group A. They got off to a strong start in doing that, pulling off a shocking upset by beating France 87-66 in the first match-up of the day. Australia, led by Andrew Bogut, put the pressure on France early and even though Tony Parker had a virtuoso performance in the second quarter to get France back in it, the French could never quite get over the hump to take the lead. Australia ultimately out-toughed them in the third quarter to pull away.

In the second match-up of the day, between the USA and China, it was essentially a repeat of the warm-up game played out a few weeks ago in the States. Kevin Durant was the top performer for the U.S. scoring 25 points as they beat China 119-62. China is the least talented team in this group, but Guo Ailun showed flashes of greatness against the U.S. despite the game being out of reach.

In the final match-up of the day for Group A, Serbia defeated Venezuela 86-62. Serbia, led by Miroslav Raduljica with 18 points, four rebounds and three assists, imposed their will in the second quarter after a slow start. Nikola Jokic didn’t contribute much in this game, only scoring four points, but expect him to be more of a central part of the offense when they face tougher opponents.
