Rio 2016 Olympic Basketball: Women’s Day 7 Recap

A recap of all the women's basketball games in Rio on Day 7.

Serbia was in a must-win situation on Friday having lost three straight coming into this game against China. Losing another would mean they would have no shot of advancing to the medal round. The Serbians finally played a good all-around game with Ana Dabovic as their leading scorer with 23 points. They beat China 80-72 to keep their hopes alive of advancing to the next round. Serbia now has to Senegal on Sunday to advance to the next round.

Team USA, led by Diana Taurasi, had another dominating performance on Friday beating Canada 81-51. Maya Moore and Taurasi were the leading scorer for the US scoring 12 points a piece. The Canadians played tough in the first quarter and this was the first game that wasn’t essentially decided by halftime. As close as this game was in the first half, Team USA completely hit their stride in the third quarter to have another blowout win. Canada won’t win gold, but if they can continue playing in the tournament as well as they have, they have a good shot to medal this year.

In the most lopsided game of the day, Spain beat Senegal 97-43 with their leading scorer Astou Ndour adding 18 points in a dominating victory. The results of this game setup a couple interesting matchups heading into Sunday. Spain will play Canada, where the winner will be fortunate to avoid Team USA until the gold medal game. On the other hand Serbia will face Senegal, where a win will see them advance to the medal round in their first Olympic appearance.
