Group D features Algeria, Honduras, Portugal and Argentina in another tight group. Portugal came runners up in the U21s European Championship last summer and could be expected to top this tight group.
Honduras pulled off quite an upset this week when they beat Algeria 3-2. Honduras had twelve shots in this game whilst Algeria had 29. Honduras stunned Algeria early on by being 2-0 up within half-an-hour. Algeria couldn’t make any of their chances hit the back of the net, both through poor finishing and some incredible performances from the Honduras goalkeeper. Algeria will feel that this game was a missed opportunity for them, and will need a great performance against a very strong Portugal and a wounded Argentina to come away with anything from this group.
Elsewhere, Portugal took on Argentina in almost a half home game as many Portuguese fans cheered on the Iberian side against mortal-enemies Argentina. The game could have gone either way, Calleri, the Argentinian striker, hit the bar; the bad luck for Argentina continued as their goalkeeper made an error to let in the second goal. Argentina really could have got something out of the game, but again could have improved their finishing, only having a shot-to-goal conversion rate of 6% during the game, and a shots on target ratio of 19%. Portugal took their chances and looked more secure in defence, they’ve certainly staked their claim on this group and should qualify top.
