The Olympics kicked off yesterday evening with the women’s football in Rio de Janeiro, the game took place in the Olympic stadium and filled up as the six games were played throughout the day.
Sweden started the competition off with a 1-0 win over South Africa. The game started with a tense first half which saw Sweden hit the bar and South Africa’s keeper produce a number of high quality saves. South Africa’s best chance came in the second half when Makhabane almost scored from a cross which ended up being more of a shot. Eventually Sweden’s quality did shine through as Fischer put the ball in the net after a goalmouth scramble.
Canada broke an Olympic record within 20 seconds of starting their Olympic campaign, as Christine Sinclair stole possession off Australia and slid it across to Beckie to score. Australia came back strongly and were encouraged after Zadorsky fouled Heyman as she was through on goal. Australia had to push players forward in the second half looking for an equaliser but paid the price as Canada’s Sinclair scored on the counter after rounding the keeper.
Brazil beat old powerhouse China in a 3-0 victory and displayed dominance throughout the game. After a number of chances, defender Monica headed home after China failed to deal with a set piece. Marta provided an assist do Alves from inside the box and Andressa curled in a free kick to Cristiane, who headed home and extended her leading goal scorer record.
Elsewhere, another dominant performance was seen by Germany as they beat debutants Zimbabwe 6-1, the favourites were up in 22 minutes after Daebritz scored from a header and Alexandra Popp did the same to double the lead. Zimbabwe did manage to pull one back just after the second half when Schult could not hold onto a shot from Makore, but Germany re-asserted their dominance with a free kick three minutes later from Behringer. Germany scored three times after that with Behringer, Leupolz and an own goal from Chibanda to make it 6-1.
The defending champions, USA, extended their winning streak in Olympic tournaments to twelve games with the opening goal coming from Carli Lloyd. Lloyd headed home in the opening moments of the game after a great run by Tobin Heath. Morgan received the ball early in the second half, inside the penalty area, and slotted it home to secure the three points for the USA.
Finally, tactically astute France ran out as 4-0 winners over an injury ravaged Colombia side. France scored three before halftime thanks to an own goal from Arias, Le Sommer scoring from a header and a free kick by Abily. After the restart, France continued to look dangerous with set-pieces as Majri fired in with a perfect free-kick.
