After securing home field advantage throughout the playoffs as the number one seed in the AFC, there was no upheaval going to be occurring in Denver today on Black Monday.  Despite that, Gary Kubiak held one of the more anticipated news conferences of the day, after the manner of victory over the Chargers on the final Sunday of the regular season.  Trailing 13-7 and with Brock Osweiler struggling, the Broncos head coach pulled the young quarterback in favour of healthy again veteran Peyton Manning, who went on to lead the team to an eventual 27-20 win over their divisional rival. The big question therefore that everyone wanted to know – who will lead the Broncos going forward into the playoffs.  And Kubiak was not forthcoming.  Kubiak did not have an opening statement prepared, instead simply inviting those present to fire away, which as I’m sure he was expecting led immediately to an opening question “Coach, what do you want to say about the quarterback situation?”  To which Kubiak responded that he was “proud of both of them” without elaborating.  That of course prompted a more direct “And what will you say about the starter?”  Kubiak replied “I won’t say anything.  We’ve got a few days off here, I’ve got a lot of things I need to do with the coaches, I’m still trying to evaluate a lot of things.  I’ve got nothing for you today.”  Praising Osweiler, he stated “we wouldn’t be in the position we are in if it wasn’t for him”.  Reading between the lines that sounds code for “thanks for filling in”. The official news then is no news on the QB front, stating that he won’t be meeting with the team until Thursday, meaning that we will have to wait at least until then to hear anything definitive.  Though frustratingly, the phrase “no timeline” was thrown out so he could well disappoint us all once again a few days from now.  The Broncos of course have time, with a bye week secured giving them an extra week.  However, having made the decision mid-game to put in the future hall of famer, it would be a surprise to hear any name other than Manning announced. In injury news, Kubiak updated that Demarcus Ware, who left during Sunday’s game and did not return, would be getting an MRI today, as will cornerback Chris Harris Jr to look at his shoulder.  The results of those medical reports will be crucial as two key contributors to what has been one of the top defences in the league this year.  As it turned out, and perhaps unsurprisingly, that update on his ailing defensive stars was the key take away from Kubiak for today. There were other minor bits and pieces.  Praise for Wade Phillips and how the defence has responded well to his scheme, and that finishing number 1 in the league on defence was special.  Regarding the right tackle situation, Kubiak was vague once again stating that everyone will play and both Polumbus and Schofield would be evaluated.  All in all, a press conference in which plenty was said, without much of anything being said at all.
