Wide receivers are way more important than kickers, right? Don’t tell that to the three kickers who scored more points than all but the top three wide receivers in Week 7. Minnesota’s Kai Forbath knocked in six field goals, including two from over 50 yards, which was enough to tie the Raven’s 18-point output and give him a 22-point NFL fantasy score. Ironically, he missed the extra point on the Vikings’ only touchdown.
Pittsburgh’s Chris Boswell had five field goals and Greg Zuerlein had enough PATs to go with his four three-pointers to match his second-best 17 fantasy points for the week. Which one makes the cut as a start ‘em in Week 8? Take a look…
Start this guy: Matt Prater, DET vs PIT
Matt Prater comes off a bye week to kick indoors against a revitalized Pittsburgh Steelers team. Prater’s long-distance prowess lets the Lions shorten the field for points, which could be important in a game featuring two teams with good defenses and explosive offensive weapons. Prater gets at least one chance to hit a 50-yarder along the way to his top NFL fantasy performance.
Sit this guy: Adam Vinatieri, IND at CIN
Shut out last week, the Colts and Adam Vinatieri face a Cincinnati defense that needs a win at home. Don’t count on a lot of points for Indianapolis in this game, either, as the offense struggles to move the ball behind an offensive line that took another injury hit last week.
Start this guy: Harrison Butker, KC vs DEN
Denver will rely on their defense to keep them in the game against the high-powered Chiefs in Kansas City this weekend. Unfortunately, Harrison Butker can tack on three at a time from half a field away. Coach Andy Reid has opened a bigger and more exciting playbook this year, but he remains a conservative at heart. He’ll keep trotting Butker out there kicking field goals all night if that is all he can get.
Sit this guy: Justin Tucker, BAL vs MIA
Miami has been an opportunistic team this season, turning several ugly games into wins. This will be another one. The Dolphins will rely on their defense to throttle the wounded Ravens offense in a field position contest. Two of the most accurate kickers in the game will largely watch the punters do battle on fourth downs.
Start this guy: Chris Boswell, PIT at DET
Considering the amount of offensive clout on both teams, this game will feature plenty of field goals against their stout defenses. Look for Chris Boswell to keep the Steelers in the game in between touchdowns in what will be a fun contest in Detroit this week.
Sit this guy: Zane Gonzalez, CLE vs MIN
Cleveland’s Zane Gonzalez made it onto the NFL fantasy leaderboards in Week 7, providing all the Browns’ offense with three field goals. His 50-plus yarder gave him 11 fantasy points. That won’t happen this week. Minnesota’s defense is hungry for statistics and will keep the Browns punter busier than Gonzalez.
Week 8 flash-in-the-pan prediction
Houston has a fantastic kicker in Ka’imi Fairbairn. It’s been hard to tell because the Texans haven’t settled for too many field goals this season. That ends this week as Deshaun Watson faces the Legion of Boom and the 12th man in Seattle. Fairbairn keeps the game close with four field goals, including one from long distance to finish as a top-five NFL fantasy kicker.
