NFL Week 4: Washington Redskins at Kansas City Chiefs, Preview and Prediction

Kansas City will look to remain undefeated, but first, they must get through Kirk Cousins and the Washington Redskins in an intriguing Monday Night matchup

The Washington Redskins were able to move to 2-1 last week, grabbing their second straight victory by defeating the Oakland Raiders 27-10. Kirk Cousins threw for 365 yards and three TDs, while the Redskins defense dominated the Raiders offense all night. RB Chris Thompson showed his big-play ability again, tallying six catches for 150 yards and a TD. If they can continue to get this type of play from both units, they could be a tough team to beat moving forward.

Kansas City took care of business last Sunday, handling division rival Los Angeles in a 24-10 victory. RB Kareem Hunt was at it again, rushing for 172 yards and a TD. Alex Smith got off to a hot start in this one, tossing two TDs in the first half, allowing Kansas City’s defense to play with a lead for all of the game. They were able to slow QB Philip Rivers and the LA offense, forcing three crucial INTs – two by DB Terrance Mitchell. They will look to continue their hot start against the Washington Redskins on Monday night.

Kareem Hunt

Did anyone see this coming? The rookie RB out of Toledo has become one of the best stories of the year through three weeks. Hunt is leading the NFL in rushing, with 401 yards and averaging 8.5 yards per carry. He has also displayed his ability to catch the ball out of the backfield, adding another 137 yards receiving. His six total TDs are tied for the league lead. HC Andy Reid is known as an offensive genius, and with a weapon like Kareem Hunt integrated in his system… the sky is the limit.

Arrowhead Stadium

Kansas City boast one of the best home field advantages in the NFL. Arrowhead stadium is loud, proud, and a tough place to walk into and leave with a victory. Kansas City is 7-2 in their last nine home games, and 3-0 in their last three home games on Monday night. In a Primetime setting, expect this place to be rocking, effectively serving as a 12th man.

Washington defense

What an impressive performance they had on Sunday night against the usually high-powered Oakland offense. They held them to 128 total yards… yes, that’s right, 128 yards…. and under 100 yards passing. Preston Smith and Ryan Kerrigan have proved to be a formidable pass rushing duo, accounting for 5.5 sacks combined through three games. The secondary is led by All-Pro CB Josh Norman, who will certainly have the attention of Chiefs QB Alex Smith on Monday night. This will be another chance for the defense to prove that they are one of the best in the NFL.

Matchup to Watch: Washington offensive line vs Kansas City defensive line

Registering eleven sacks in their first three games, the Kansas City defensive line has been as impressive as any team’s with their ability to apply pressure. DT Chris Jones has been phenomenal with three sacks, seven tackles, and an INT thus far. OLB Justin Houston has looked like his old self through three weeks, accumulating four sacks himself.

The Redskins offensive line–anchored by LT Trent Williams—has only given up seven sacks so far and only gave up one to a Khalil Mack-led Raiders pass rush last week. They are giving Kirk Cousins ample time to find playmakers—which will be a huge key to success for them this season. The matchup between these two units will be pivotal in deciding which team will win this game.

Fantasy Football Tip: Kansas City WR Tyreek Hill

WR Tyreek Hill is one of the most explosive players in the NFL. Hill is leading the Chiefs in catches (22), receiving yards (253), and receiving TDs (2) this season. He has had eight catches in two of the first three games, and even poses as a threat as a returner for the Chiefs special teams. HC Andy Reid has done a good job finding ways to get Hill the ball in space, so I would expect a big play or two out of him in this Monday night matchup.

Betting Tip: Washington (+7)

Washington has had an impressive last two weeks, and their defense is really coming into form. On the other hand, Kansas City is arguably the best team in the entire league and their offense is clicking on all cylinders. I think this game will end up being closer than many think, and even potentially coming down the wire. Kansas City is 4-9 ATS in their last 13 games as the home favorite, so I like Washington getting seven here.

Prediction: Kansas City Chiefs 28-23 Washington Redskins

It’s hard to go into Arrowhead Stadium and leave with a victory, especially in a Primetime night game. Kirk Cousins and company have rebounded since their Week 1 defeat to the Eagles, and they are coming off an impressive win against Oakland last Sunday night. The Washington defense had a stifling performance against Oakland, and ranks top 10 in yards per game and scoring defense.

On the other side, the Chiefs are third in the NFL in scoring offense and are averaging nearly 400 yards of total offense per game. Rookie RB Kareem Hunt has been off of the charts, leading the league in rushing by over 100 yards. Kansas City will score late in the 4th, ending Washington’s chances, and move to 4-0 on the season.
