The Green Bay Packers finished last season in disappointment following an unbelievable collapse in the NFC Championship game against the Seattle Seahawks. They came into the season as favorites to make the Super Bowl but a preseason injury to their star receiver, Jordy Nelson, caused people to doubt them. However, once the season started, this team quickly put the doubters in their place, getting off to a 5-0 record and looking like the same old Packers. Their success can be pinned on 3 factors: Aaron Rodgers, the coaching staff and the front office.
Why are they undefeated?
Aaron Rodgers is the best quarterback in the NFL. He can do things that no one else can. Even though he is without his favorite target, he has won every game and make every defense he has played against look like high school kids at some point.
The coaching staff is easily one of the best in the league, largely due to the longevity and consistency of the group. Mike McCarthy, particularly after giving up play-calling duties, is one of the best head coachewillthe NFL. Furthermore, most of the coaches are brought up and promoted within the organization, meaning the players don’t have to learn new schemes every offseason.
Finally, they have one of the best front offices in the NFL. They regularly draft very well and never find themselves spending big in free agency. In fact, at one point in the offseason, of the 60 players under contract, only one — Julius Peppers — had ever played a game for a different team. The fact the Packers always build talent from within is a large reason they are so successful.
The season so far
So far, the Packers have handed the Chicago Bears, Seattle Seahawks, Kansas City Chiefs, San Francisco 49ers, and St. Louis Rams defeats, with 3 of those games coming at home. Though the first 3 games were certainly Green Bay’s best offensively, statistically and visually, the last two games haven’t exactly been bad. Furthermore, the defense has stepped up big time, particularly in the last 2 games.
Now the question is, can they go 16-0? Yes, they can. Will they? Maybe. Two of the Packers toughest remaining games are in the next 3 weeks, on the road against the Denver Broncos and Carolina Panthers. Fortunately for the Packers, neither of those teams boast great offenses. If Rodgers can play like he has and make at least a few big plays in these games, and the defense continues as it has the last 2 weeks, the Packers will definitely be in a good position to win both games.
When will they lose?
Perhaps their biggest test, though, will come in Week 15 when they have to travel to Arizona to take on the Cardinals. At the moment, the Cardinals are one of the best teams in the NFL, and they looked similar last year before Palmer went down. If Palmer, and other key players, stay healthy, then this game could be the decider for who gets the #1 seed in the NFC for the postseason.
