To the surprise of some, the Cincinnati Bengals remain unbeaten heading into Week 6. Many during preseason wrote off the Bengals, but their impressive start to the season makes them strong contenders for a place in next year’s Super Bowl. In this article we will look ahead to their upcoming fixtures and discuss where they may lose their perfect record.
Why are they undefeated?
Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton has been criticised over the years for his winless playoff record and an apparent inability to win big games, but this season Dalton has been incredible. The Bengals faced their biggest test of the season so far last week when they took on the Seahawks. Despite being 24-7 behind in the fourth quarter, Cincinnati clawed their way back into the game and managed to pick up a very important victory in the process. Dalton played a huge role in the team’s resurgence, proving doubters wrong that he can deliver under pressure in a big match situation. With 1518 passing yards, 11 passing touchdowns, and 2 rushing touchdowns, Dalton is currently the highest fantasy scorer in the NFL. Bengals wide receiver A.J. Green and tight end Tyler Eifert have also both played key roles in the Bengals’ success.
Can the Bengals’ successful run continue this week?
They will face another tricky task this week, when they take on an improved Bills side in Buffalo. The Bills are 3-2 this season, after a sneaking away from Nashville with a win last week against the Titans. Buffalo have not taken advantage of their home field advantage so far, with both their defeats so far coming at home. The Bills are no pushovers, but the way the Bengals are playing at the moment I think they will have enough quality to come away with their sixth win of the season – though it will be close.
The Bengals face another tricky away trip in Week 7 when they face the Steelers. This result comes a lot down to whether Big Ben will be back from injury; however, Pittsburgh expect that he will return in Week 8, so I think this will be another win for the Bengals as I don’t believe Michael Vick will pose a big enough threat to the Cincinnati defense.
Their next two fixtures are against teams that both have losing records in the Browns and the Texans respectively; I expect the Browns to give the Bengals a harder time, but with the game taking place in Cincinnati I think this will be yet another win. After their bye week, they face the Texans, who have started poorly, winning just 1 of their first 5 games. I think this should be a reasonably comfortable routine victory for Cincinnati.
Will it ever end?
I am predicting their perfect run to come to an end in Week 12 when they travel to Arizona. The Cardinals have looked very strong once again this season and with home field advantage this is where I’m predicting the Bengals’ perfect season comes to an end.
Whatever happens in the next few weeks, it’s sure to be interesting to see how the Bengals perform. If they can keep Andy Dalton and AJ Green on good form, the sky is the limit for this team. It’s an exciting time to be a Bengals fan right now.
