NFL Week 14 Preview: Can Mariota continue the Titans’ form from last week?

The Titans started the season with a demolition of the Buccaneers and fans couldn’t be happier with Mariota over Winston. Though Mariota has been good since, the Titans haven’t fared so well. Though they are still somehow, just about, in the playoff race. The Jets are loving life under the influence of Ryan Fitz-magic. They’re 7-5, currently sit in the 6th seed in the AFC and 2nd in the AFC East. The defense is very good and the offense is enjoying having some very talented weapons. The Todd Bowles era has started very nicely for the Jets.

Three Keys to the Game:

  1. The Jets blitz packages

The Jets boast one of the better defenses in the league and a large part of that is thanks to their blitz packages. They excel at disguising looks and creating free rushers. Today they face a rookie QB and they need to make him uncomfortable and force turnovers. However, they also have to make sure that they keep him in the pocket when they blitz. If they do, they will e in a great position to win this game.

  1. Titans front seven

The Jets boast a dangerous running game on the back of one of the most aggressive runners in the NFL. They have also managed to keep Fitzpatrick upright a lot and he has made big plays with his legs to avoid sacks. The Titans have to get to Fitzpatrick and put pressure on him whilst also limiting the Jets ground game.

  1. Titans ground game

The Titans rushing attack has been poor this season. The group of running backs have never really gotten going and Mariota hasn’t used his legs nearly as much as people would’ve expected – though he has used them more recently. If they can run the ball against this defense and Mariota can utilise the read-option and the play-action then the Titans could get the upset.

Match-up to watch

The Jets receivers vs The Titans secondary

Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker have been very good for the Jets this year, revitalising the Jets passing offence, but they face the 7th best pass defense (230.6 yards a game) today. Luckily, both of these receivers can box out defenders and fight for the ball. If they can get open and/or make plays for Fitzpatrick, the Jets will be in a good spot to win.

Prediction

New York Jets

The Jets have been very good, top-to-bottom, over the past 2 weeks and I don’t see that slowing down today. Though the Titans have potential on this squad, it’s only potential at the moment. I think the Jets have more weapons than the Titans and I think that will be evident.
