It’s that time again. The whole of New York will be watching the MetLife stadium this weekend, as the New York Jets go head to head with the New York Giants. This is always a big game, with the young upstart Jets wanting to black their elder bunkmates eye. Sharing a state creates rivalries, sharing a city creates tension, but when you share a stadium?… The Giants and Jets face each other in the league once every 4 years, and the showdown is always electric. In the past 12 games these teams have played, the Giants have walked away victorious 8 times, so the Jets have it all to prove. Playing this late in the season, both teams have picked up injuries – so neither team is at 100% – but those injuries could make all the difference in this game. Both teams have their starting QBs lined up nicely, and are showing a lot of injured players out in the back of the defence. This could lead both team to concentrate on pass rushing heavily, in an attempt to force the QB to a run system. With two defensive ends returning to full practice from the injury list, the Giants could be weaker on their lineman blitz, so they could end up forcing through some Linebackers to keep that pressure on Fitzpatrick. With Williams and Revis out as corner backs, the Jets could struggle to cover OBJ deep in the field. Could this be a weakness that the Giants would try to exploit, or have the Jets got a plan B to cover this? The last time these teams faced off at the MetLife, it was in 2011, and the Giants walked away with the win. History indicates that the Giants are the team to go with. This whole season is still wide open, and the NFC East is a classic example of this. At 5-6, with 5 games left, the Giants are just behind the Redskins for the Division title, but they still have to face the Panthers, and return to the Eagles, who beat them earlier in the season. If they want the title, they’re going to have to fight hard. The Jets have a slight advantage, at 6-5 so far, but they have to contend with the Patriots for their division, who are at 10-1 so far. The Jets would have to beat everyone, including the Patriots and the Bills to get the division shot, although falling short of this could still put them in contention for the wildcard. So both teams want – no – need this win to keep their season dreams alive. My heart says that the Giants will take this home, but my head says that the Jets are going to push this hard, and might walk away with it in the end. My Prediction? A low scoring game, with the Giants squeezing the Jets out in the last quarter. 18-14.
